Got a fire extinguisher? Neither did he....
This C4 was brought into my buddies shop yesterday. Take notice of the melted roof, the interior is toast as well. Fire ate a hole in the TPI too. The smell was bad, like melted plastic, and it looks much worse up close.

Here's a shot of the motor, or what's left of it. Notice the nice hole in the TPI

Eeek!
Poor guy could have used this. :( https://www.corvetteforum.com/techti...=148&TopicID=2
Looks like a fast car too...gatorback serpantine to prevent belt slippage, A/C delete, Edelbrock valve covers(presumably heads).
I'm surprised that there isn't a metal support in the center of the hood...I always thought there were two, but I guess I was wrong.
That really sucks for that guy. People ask me pretty often why I installed a fire-extinguisher in my car. "Aren't you confident in your wiring?" I've wired quite a bit of the car, its not my work that I'm worried about, it's Cheby's and the wire that worries me, its getting to be an old car, I'd just as soon it stays around another 16 years or more.

Not only is it a good reminder to have a extinguisher in your car, but should also remind everyone to have one (or two) in the garage in an easily accessible place! What could be worse then burning your baby to the ground before she gets out on the road!

I consider it cheap insurance. But I do not know if 2 1/2 lbs would put out the type of fire you have shown.

Re: Got a fire extinguisher? Neither did he.... (C3 Shark Tank)
I have a question. Do you think a battery cutoff would help in a situation like that? I have a 76 that I bought with no front clip due to a fire. My best guess is a bad rubber fuel line but it could have been from wires.
I have seen two car fires, one was athunderbird, carb backfire at an intersection and the other was an olds that shorted under the dash.It was a shame with the tbird. It was an old guy with a pristine 67 and he looked like he was about to cry.

That's a good reason for a fire extinguisher and a battery cutoff switch. I'll have to add them to my list. Maybe at the top of the list.

The installation is not terribly elegant but it is secure. And that is the important factor. You do not want that unit flying about in the cabin. And believe it or not, that location is ideal as the Wife has no problems getting in and out of the car. It is not an inconvenience.
I drilled two holes through the floor to mount the fire extingusher bracket and used SS machine bolts, washers and nuts so corrosion would not raise its ugly head. The holes are very small and easily repaired if need be. The underneath of the holes is sealed with silicone to ensure a watertight application. I have the rigid plastic weatherboots so they now have two small holes in the passenger side but that is not a concern to me.
The plastic bracket is OK but I will probably go with a more robust steel version come driving season in April.

Re: Got a fire extinguisher? Neither did he.... (9SecVette)
After all the money I spend on this car I finally put one in mine. Actually I have 2 now, one mounted on the passenger seat and another in back. It would take years of therapy if I had to watch it burn up.....although some would say I need therapy now :jester

Re: Got a fire extinguisher? Neither did he.... (C3 Shark Tank)
That tpi unti still may be useable. probably not if the fire melted the runner, but if it just had a bad intake backfire that blew out through there and started the fire maaaaaaybe. all in all its a damn shame. i agree that a 2.5lb probably wouldnt have killed that fire, but who knows? if he got it early it might have. anyone else wonder why the tire dosent look that bad? maybe it was just rotated and were looking at a non-burned spot.

Re: Got a fire extinguisher? Neither did he.... (C3 Shark Tank)
As for the fire, judging where it was, I'd have to say ruptured fuel line, which runs along the right fenderwell, then up through the AC compressor, into the front of the motor. There is a rubber transition between the hard line that runs from the fuel tank, to the hard line that runs into the fuel rail. I've seen one that had a HUGE bubble on it, very close to rupturing. It was a good thing we caught it when we did.
