4500 for a damaged 68...worth it?
Hi everyone,
I currently own a 89 and have had a 74. I have the opportuinity to buy a 68 convertable for 4500. The car has 65k mi. on it but it needs a nose, hood hinge and possibly some body work along with a paint job. My plan is to buy it and fix it up to resell. About how much should I plan to need to fix this and what could I sell it for? I know its hard to say without seeing the car but I don't know anything about the older model vettes. I would appreciate any help.

not to scare you...but it can get pretty expensive to fix up a 68.It also depends on the engine/tranny combo.matching #'s are important to some people and they will pay the extra money for it.
good luck and post some pics

Depending on what you start with, it could easilly cost way more to fix or restore it than it would be worth when finished. At $4,500, I think that it would be safe to assume that it's not a BB car with original engine or one that would command a real high price once completed anyway. Your statement that you "don't know anything about the older models" suggests to me that you could quickly find yourself in over your head on this one. If there is no other work needed (interior, engine, etc.) and you are able to do all of the work yourself (including body and paint), you might be able to show a profit.

I will try to give you an idea if you plan to fix to at least a high 3 or low 2 car.
1500 for front end glass
500 for chrome bumpers, signals etc
5000 for a complete paintjob, less if you can match
1500 for front end rebuild - most likely needs it after a wreck or age
1500 interior if it needs it
Add tires, brakes, front end frame straighten if really hit, engine work, trans work. rear end, exhaust etc. You easily can put $10k+ into repairs + the car price. Otherwise it is just another 68 driver that was cleaned up and painted. As said before if it is not a # matching car now, it will be overly priced. Only exception is if this is BB that is number matching at least for the block, heads, intake and exhaust. The rest can be added by a someone.
I would really do my homework before I jumped. Good luck in whatever you decide.
