Bad News on my 406
The block is cracked. Its junk. Nice crack running from the head stud hole thru to the bore across the deck. Im not happy. We are trying to source another block. Luckily i still havent paid for the engine and the owner will subtract the price of a replacement block.
The cam is a Crower Part Number 00245. Its a big hydraulic cam. Im trying to find the destop dyno cam file for this and Dart Iron Eagle 215 Heads.

 Man that stinks. I bought a 4 bolt 400 block and after hearing of these blocks cracking I bought a Dart block with the 4.125 bore. My fear was to invest in machining the block and installing everything then having to go thru it all over again. Hopefully you can find a good block quick :) . I'd look for a 2 bolt main because they're suppose to have stronger mains ;) .
For DD, you need the compression ratio, carb size, intake style & large or small tube headers to input.

The guy I baught mine from had three others sitting on the floor of his garage next to his ProStock Camero. All were 4 bolt stock blocks that he spins 7200 rpms with. I wouldn't worry about cracks in general, you just got a bad block. Stuff happens!

That sucks. If you weren't going to get another block I was going to ask you for the crank and rods :D My dad wants a 383 for his '64.

I don't know what the going price for a 400 block is, but I think the Motown block is available from P.A.W. for about $1600.00. Summit or Jegs might have it for even less.

They're practically unavailable around here.
I have, however, seen a few good, magged, unbored, 2-bolt 400 blocks at various swap meets. They're going for about $300-$400 these days.
Seriously.
I'm glad I have a spare.

Re: Bad News on my 406 (The Dude)
I have found another 400 block but it is only 2 bolt. Better than nothing I guess. The block will cost me $150. I am getting it sonic tested and all that stuff before i use it. I really hope I dont have to go the 383/350 route. I so looked forward to a 406!
