1982 700R4 transmission upgrade
My 1982 Corvette CE with 700R4 transmission has 97k miles. With no previous experience with the 700R4, I started to check into rebuild or replacement. Chevy dealer does not supply these any more. I have heard that over the lifetime of the 700R4 many upgrades and improvements where made. Can I buy a 1988 or new 700R4 and install in in my vette? Any mechanical differences? What about the computer control of the 700R4, will the 1982 Corvette ECM have any issues with the newer trans?
One more question about the wiring going to the trans. I checked the timing on the vette this weekend and when I was disconnecting and reconnecting the EST wire for timing check I noticed that the 3 wire connector going to the trans had the center wire disconnected. I am the second or third owner so I do not know when this wire was disconnected. Anybody have any experience on this, why it would be disconnected and what it is for?
thanks for any input,

The 82 Corvette 700r4 is different than the off the shelf 700r4, the tail stock and rear mount are the main differences. But, I think those are interchangeable between different versions of the tranny.
