Default 700R4 in a late 70's corvette????

Hi I am posting this for a friend of mine. He is looking to buy my motor and tranny and put it in a late 70's Corvette. The only think is I have a 700R4 transmission. HE is wondering if he can swap this tarnny into the vette without a problem. I know in my car when i swapped from the TH 350 to 700R4 i had to relacte the crossmemeber, shorten the driveshaft, and change the shifter cable. I am not sure what has to be done to do this in a corvette? If anyone could do this swap could you please let me know what has to be done. Thanks.

Unless you're just dying to get rid of the 700R4, tell your buddy a 200R4 is an easier transplant.

I'm sure other forum members will chime in and tell you exactly why.

Well either way I am getting rid of the 700R4 because I am putting an LT1 and 4L60E into my SS. I told him i would give him the 700R4 with the motor it is rebuilt with less than 700 miles on it. I do however have a spare 200R4 sitting around that i dont know if its any good. The guy us a friend of mine so if a 200R4 is an easier swap just tell me what to do so I can tell him and I will just give him the 200R4 at least he has a core to be rebuilt. I just need to know what the swap entails.

The same thing applies for the Vette as well. You have to re-locate the mounting pad of the crossmember, shorten the driveshaft and some people change out the shifter (in my 1980, the stock one worked fine).

The band servo hit the tranny tunnel on my car, so I had to cut the tunnel, and relocate with glass and resin.....tunnel not wide enough....shorten driveshaft, redo mounting shoe off crosss support....and the rest of the obvious stuff....shifter, kickdown, etc....speedo.....
cooling lines....

not much of a swap in a car with automatic from factory...but if it's a stickshift car...welll.....have fun.....mine was....

the use of a 200 tranny is easier in that it's smaller, and shorter, so driveshaft don't need cutting....dunno about any other advantages....

The others are correct about the swap being easier with a 200-4r. Also, a properly rebuilt 200-4r does not have the problems inherent to a 700-r4 (clutch failures, etc.)
