Default Ignition box mounting

Has anybody mounted an ignition box in the little space where the washer fluid canister used to be? Mine doesn't have the fluid reservoir and I thought this would be a good place to mount. It looks like there is just enough room a horizontal (parallel to ground) section right next to the body and in front of the gills.

Mine is mounted in the drivers side well. Same place opposite side, lots of space.

I mounted my MSD box right where you are talking about. I fabricated an aluminum bracket that used two existing holes. Worked out very nice

74 vert - No, I don't have it yet. They are actually supposed to ship today so hopefully in about a week I will have it.

Now that I looked at it more, I think I want to mount it on the radiator support. It would go on the front (facing headlights) passenger side. There's room there for it and I could run all the wiring along the side where the fender and hood meet. Has anyone mounted theirs there? I'm thinking it would allow for a little more airflow and also be a little more accessible.

Not that it will happen to you but that's where my 6A box was before I bought the Digital 6 .
My 6A fried there.A couple of guys have had no problem with that area. One hooked up a fan to give it airflow. After a call to MSD airflow is the most important need for the box.

tshort...

Pat(patsnitrovette) showed me a pic of where he had his ignition box mounted.... in front of the overflow tank on the inside fenderwell above the passenger tire. Lots of room there.

A way rough kidney infection has kept me out of the garage, but I should finally have the engine out this Saturday. I'll have the Superwinch mounted in the garage Friday nite and will post pics of the pull Saturday night.

I've had 3 E-bayers ask me questions about these engines. Anyone contact you?

I have my Crane HI6 mounted behind the dash pad. It has been there for 4 years now with no problems. Maybe I'm just lucky. If I was to do it over it would be where the washer bottle should be. (I went for the stealth look) :D

Barry, nobody has contacted me about the engines. Where these CF people or just eBayers? How would they get your email?
I didn't actually buy mine through the eBay link. I just mentioned the eBay add and had them do a few custom things. Then I changed my mind and went with the E TEC engine. :D It was supposed to ship out yesterday but it may still be a while. This is one of their first E TEC engines and Mark said he wants to make sure they get everything right..... :skep: kinda a little scary.

I've got BAD personal experience with an ignition box mounted in the engine bay - it friied from the ambient underhood heat. Stop dead on the tollroad - not a pretty site. It was mount out of the way too - down behind the passenger wheel well, right by the vent grill - where it was getting plenty of ventilation !!!

After some research on the topic - the are only 2 places I'd ever mount one on a Vette would be 1. in front of the radiator or 2. in the passenger compartment. Those things don't like to get hot.

BTW - I truely can not tell the difference after removing the box and rewiring as GM intended. Starts the same, runs the same.

Thanks for all your help everybody. I'm going to mount it to the radiator support on the right side in front of the radiator. The wires appear to be long enough as supplied and their should be good ventilation/air flow there. I'll post some pictures once I get it in.

Well, as usual with me, I changed my mind again and just went ahead and mounted it where I first wanted to mount it. I'm not sure if I will keep it there but it'll stay there for now. I decided against mounting on radiator support because it looks like it might interfere with the hood when it's opened. Once I get the radiator and hood back on I'll see. I was just bored this morning and wanted to work on the car and this is all I could think of doing. Here's a pic:

My MSD6A spent years behind the firewall without a complaint.

I really like the behind the firewall idea Jim. Spent several days mounting my 6AL in the jack compartment and ran the wires under the center console. But I think behind the firewall trick is cooler (temperature) and more servicable, may see some rain water though (wouldn't expect much).

I did this a couple years ago. Just drilled 4 holes to mount to firewall. Used nuts, washers, & bolts & lock-tight (medium strength, blue). You can reach the back side of the holes down the leaf screen on the side.
