Calling Ontario Owners re Emissions
Our version of emissions testing (Provincial) is called Drive Clean as you know. But it only goes back 20 years so C3s are exempt. However I believe that one can still be fined for a modified exhaust system (e.g true duals with no cat cons) under federal statutes (Environmental Protection Act). The charge can be laid by the Ontario Provincial Police or the Provincial Ministry of Transportation (random sniffs/tests). Am I right on this? Anyone know a Police Officer to whom this question could be posed?

You are right if you remove the cat con you can be fined and forced to repair it. I doubt every much that a cop will pull you over just to check your exhaust but if you're pulled over for speeding they may start looking over the car for other things.
Also, all muffler shops can and will refuse to work on the exhaust.
I did this in my younger days to a 76 Pontiac I owned. It was nothing but trouble everytime I needed exhaust work.

I have 2 meighbours who are cops, one local the other OPP, they both said yes, and that they do check on many perf. cars to ensure that their exhaust systems are legal.

You don't have to go thru the emmissions test but that doesn't mean all your pollution stuff should not be there.
I think you are relatively safe as they mainly go after kids with rice mobiles. My next door neighbour is a cop and he just laughs when I tell him about my motor especially the nitrous, he just wants a ride when I get it installed :D

Re: Calling Ontario Owners re Emissions (gdh)
That's what I thought. I have seen Police Officers with mirrors on long handles at Cruise Days. And I believe they were checking for cat cons on post-1974 cars. I believe the fine is around $375.00 plus the costs of restoring to basically stock form. But that was pre-Drive Clean. But I guess the regulations have not changed.
So the idea of a "test pipe" for a 2-1-2 is out. I might contemplate a dual system with cat cons on each side but that is getting pretty expensive.

Re: Calling Ontario Owners re Emissions (paul79)
Paul, I am running with no semblance of emissions at all (headers, duals, side) and have been pulled over 4 times in the Vette (once with the open sidepipes) and have not had a problem at all.
So far......

Apparently, there's not enough "real" crime to keep the cops up there busy. Having highly-trained law enforcement officers walk around with mirrors at car shows is a grotesque waste of taxpayers' money!
Be that as the case may be Paul, at the very least consider putting a high-flow cat on your 2-1-2 system. OE-style cats were very restrictive.

When I actually fix my bubbed exhaust I am going to put high flow cats back in. Although it won't be the oem 2-1-2, It will have the cats.
My muffler shop also told me this when I had the car in to fix up a bit of the handy work of the previous owner.

Being a cop, I think you would really have to **** me off to get checked or told to replace the cats etc. As far as the emissions sniffer goes, it wouldn't know the difference on earlier C3's as even with cats they would be considered gross polluters. The only problem I could forsee is if a shop refused to do work on a modified exhaust system, although when I had my work done they just thought it normal not to see cats on a 76. ;) :hurray:

I wonder if they'd even know what emissions equipment to look for on mine?
Anyone care to guess? :D

I think the only emissions equipment in 67 was the PCV valve! I don't think they had even gone to the AIR Pump, until 68 or 69.

Changing my emissions equipment takes about 30 seconds.

I purchased a high-flow cat con from Corvette Central about six years ago. The pellet version is thus long gone. I agree with your comment about the use of Police Officers' time.

Flav,
I am not going to ask what you have been pulled over for.... ;) . My general impression is that many Officers on traffic duty are car enthusiasts also. And love to have a peek at old Corvettes such as C3s. I was stopped several years ago for going too "slow" in a residential area. The Wife and I were looking at flower garden arrangements. I couldn't figure out what was the problem initially but the young Police Officer was more interested in my car than my driving skills at 20mph. It soon became evident that he wanted advice on purchasing a C3. So we chatted for about 20 minutes.... I enjoyed that.

That's an interesting comment. Being a Police Officer what does get you and colleagues in a foul mood? At least when it comes to older performance cars such as a C3?
