Default Does this crank sprocket look OK?

It's a new Dyna Gear HD for a 454. I'm not an expert, but shouldn't it be nice & shiney like the cam wheel? The guy at the store said that's how it's "heat treated"? The one I removed looks better than this! :D

I'd say as long as the gear teeth appear to be in perfect condition, there's nothing to worry about.

I have seen a lot of heat treated steel. It comes out of the furnace looking like this after it has cooled down. You won't be able to see it once it is in the engine. As long as the teeth are good I would say it is in good shape. Sometimes people glass bead them to look nice. Just cosmetics

It looks like it has been case hardened to me, it should be fine..... (pause while I run down to the garage....) I just went and looked at a new Dana timing set I have and it looks very much like yours. So I'd guess it's the way it's supposed to look.

I'd worry about that cast cam sprocket before the crank one :)

Thanks for the input guys. I should be ok then. The cam sprocket does appear cast but is actually much sturdier than the stock one.

Take a look at this: http://www.scaleaero.com/heating_metal.htm
It is not specific to engine parts but it is actually a fairly good "laymans" explanation of heat treating steel. :yesnod:

They all look like that, at least the aftermarket ones do. Yes it is heat treating. Nothing to worry about.

Looks fine to me. This is a rather dull looking Cloyes unit that I put in my 1979 last summer.
