I want that Mustang sound (muffler advice)
You guys know the sound the newer mustangs have, I am looking for mufflers that come close to that if I can. Car is an 81 with the stock 2-1-2 setup. I will be putting on a high flow converter and two new mufflers. I know a Chevy is going to sound different than a Ford but this is an easy way to let you know the tone I want. Thanks.

Yes, I know the sound well. I've had 3 late-model Mustangs. The best thing I can think to do is try and replicate the exhaust as closely as possible...still the 350 will sound different than the 302 or the new 281. The late model Mustangs are true duals all the way out with an H-pipe (crossover) in b/w the headers and the mufflers. Stock, they are 2 1/4" pipes from the headers back. Most of the ones you hear at least have upgraded to 2 1/2" and aftermarket mufflers.
As far as mufflers go, a set of 2-chamber Flowmasters or Dynomax Ultra-Flows (my favorite) will get you close to the sound you're after, but I'm not sure the 2-1-2 setup will get you exactly where you want to be.

the 289s sound like that because they are overhead valves. at least that what i was told. i always thought they soundes really weak. kinda high pitched and i dunno, unintimidating. ive heard some really means Ls1/Lt1s though. but its my opinion and thats not really what you asked for. i dont think you are going to be able to get that sound exactly. switch to mustang cats and mufflers and it should be pretty close.

the 289s sound like that because they are overhead valves.
Mostly the sound has to do with the...
1>size of the motor
2>configuration of the exhaust
3>size of exhaust pipes
4>location of mufflers
and
5>length of tailpipe
As such at best you can maybe come close. the only way you'll get that sound though is to drop a mustang driveline in it - and we know you dont want to do that. :lol:
Go true duals - probably 2 1/4" with an x-pipe and flowmasters - will sound a lot like a mustang. IMO YMMV

I currently have a 2000GT and they (the 4.6L) sound about the same as the old 5.0L, what makes a difference between the 2 is cam durations (which is much) Anyways what makes Mustang sound like that is that they have teh muffs in the middle of the car. Meaning, they have 4-5 feet of tail pipe compared to a car that has muffs in the rear and has 10in of tail pipe. Have you ever heard a mustang with dumps (tail pipes after the muffs and turn downs)??? It sounds almost like a camaro!
It will be very difficult to make your vette sound like a mustang, because your motor is carburated, its have a different rumble to it. Mustangs from 86- were carbed and dont sound the same.
Well the best chance is to put the muffs in the middle of the car and with long tail pipes.

The muffler itself has the most influence on how the exhaust sounds. A Suburban running through a single cat and into dual Flowmasters can sound better ("badder") than a stock Vette or Mustang. If you want that low rumble, you'll probably like some Flowmasters. If you want a "real power" sound, you'll want headers and true duals.

I always thought that the sound came from the firing order of the motor? IE Mustangs sounding bada88. I dunno......

Well, since I recently replaced the exhaust on my '81, I thought I'd chime in with my experience to give you a little direction. I replaced all of the original piping with brand new SS piping. I replaced the cat with a new hi-flo cat, and I threw on a pair of Flowmaster Series 40 SS mufflers. I'm extremely happy with the low tone growl at idle and throughout acceleration. The only drawback is the resonance I get at approximately 2500 RPM. I try to avoid driving 45 MPH in order to avoid that range of RPM, so I'm usually driving 40 or below, or more likely 50 and above. The resonance isn't horrible, but it can get a little annoying if you're driving at 45 for a while. This spring, I plan to put a bolt-on test pipe in place of the cat. I'm really interested to see how that will sound and if the resonance will be any better or worse. I guess I'll have to wait another 5 months to find out though. Oh, by the way, I did notice a slight increase in power. Nothing earth shattering, but I can get the tires to chirp a little easier than with the old exhaust. I think that really says something considering the lack of power on this car straight from the factory.

When I had my '95GT, I ran an off road h-pipe and a MAC cat-back exhaust. I have never had a car that got so many compliments and thumbs up about exhaust sound. It really sounded tough. Mac uses a baffled muffler called a Flow Path.

They sound a lot like Flowmaster 40's for the most part, but they have a little deeper tone, and not as much of that "cackle". I'm thinking about putting a set on my '73. Good luck in your quest.

The tone I am refering to is on the newer cars. Living in Ca I cant be messing with putting duals on as it wont pass inspection. I guess the question is what mufflers will give that deep rumble. I just got rid of an LS1 Trans Am that sounded pretty good stock but the Vette sounds weak compared to it. I think I have narrowed down my choices between sone type of Flowmasters and the Ultraflows. I believe the Ultraflows tuck up inside better. Am I correct? Thanks for all your suggestions.

Your car will never sound like a mustang, anything short of putting in a cobra motor or something will not let your car sound remotely close to what the new mustangs sound like today. Chevy motors and Ford motors have two completely and distinct sounds, that won't ever change. You could try every muffler in the world and you won't get a sound like a mustang.

Mustangs sound the way they do because of many factors, the least of which
is the exhaust system.
The Ford engines have a completly reverse firing order from a small block
chevy and the firing order affects the sound. The compression, the valve
size, the cam duration, lift and valve overlap, the exhaust design, the muffler
design, length and type of tail pipes etc.
It's more than just the exhaust that causes an engine to sound the way it does.
Take the viper for example, all those cubic inches you would think it would
sound deep and nasty, yet it sounds like a UPS truck on crack (even Viper
owners for the most part don't care for the exhaust note..)
As for Overhead Valves.. Anything aside from a flat head or a Briggs & Stratton
all have Over Head Valves (Even Over Head Cam engines, use Over Head Valves) :D
