What is special about "drag racing only" shocks?

They provide little resistance in the upward stroke - and max on the down.
That way, the car can quickly shift it's weight to the rear during launch.

They allow the front end to lift up easier. My dad's '64 with stock suspension, except with 10/90 drag shocks on the front will pull the front end up one foot off the ground. Of course his suspension is now no where near stock.

Good synopsis Dave....
There are a couple of other advantages though. Most drag shocks are built with coil-overs(the stagnant springs most cars have) that allow you to change those springs to stiffen or allow more weight transfer in a small amount of time. They also have the advantage of allowing you to load weight from one side of the car to the other(or up down) with a simple spanner wrench in between rounds if you are having launching problems or tire spin.

:iagree:
The 90/10 means the percentage of resistance to travel. Most companies don't recommend using them on the street, but you can get by with it if you drive accordingly (i.e. no high performance driving on streets!!). I have 90/10 shocks on the front and 40/60 shocks on the rear of my prostreet Cutlass. They are definitely for drag racing only and not for turning. I can drive the car on the street and do quite often, but it rides more like a luxury car than anything else. The car just kind of floats along, with a real soft ride (leans a little in the turns, but not excessive). Anyway, unless your going to ONLY drive your car the least bit hard at the DRAG STRIP, stay with a good set of normal street shocks. I have KYB's on my vette and still pull 1.9 sec 60' foot times.
