American Motors AMX helped produce the LT1 Corvette?
I have not heard this before but according to Zora he was worried about the AMX winning in SCCA B/Pin 1969-70. On page 335 of the Jerry Burton book on Zora D., Zora says that he was concerned about the winning in the SCCA B/P class where the small block Corvettes ran. He designed the ZR-1 package and pushed for the LT1 engine to give the B/P racers more HP.

It's possible. I do not know. But those were pretty impressive cars before AMC went south. Perhaps Dep can comment....

I hadn't heard that before but I'm not surprized. During that period AMC was very aggressive about establishing a performance image. They saw the power of "race on Sunday, sell on Monday" that the "big three" were using and they wanted a piece of the action. The end results were some pretty neat cars but, alas, not for long. Smog laws and a gas crisis put an end to that. Even the awesome Gremlins and Pacers couldn't save them :). If not for the success of the Jeep Cherokee, AMC would have folded even sooner.

I LOVED my AMX. Haven't had a car since that I enjoyed as much, except maybe this Vette, but not nearly as fast, not even close.

OK, I will admit to having a 1973 Gremlin X with the 304cid and the Levis interior. I loved it! And it was OK quick. But if I remember correctly there was a 360cid version in the background that had a lot more spunk!

My best friend's father worked for AMC doing design for their heat/ac duct worked and he bought an AMX for his family car. He said they would sit in back where there was no seat. Can you imagine that today? I think they had a big block 390 and seems I read that it was actually lighter than the sbc. Anyone know for sure?

Guess it was a small block but I still think I read it was lighter than the SBC
Check out this website, pretty  :

AMC was the Rodney Dangerfield of the Muscle car world. They got no respect. AMC did try hard though and had some nice equipment like the AMC/Hurst Scrambler, Super Stock AMX/Hurst , the Javelin TransAm team with Donahue and Penske who won TA in 1971, the Madador NASCAR program, and the AMX in SCCA M/P.
That web site claims that the AMX was only steel American sports car but this is not really true. The Shelby GT350 and the Yenko Stinger were sold as two seat sports cars so they can be made legal for SCCA.

I had a '73 AMX with a 360ci, cowl induction hood (fiberglass!). I bought it (1980) from a buddy of mine that worked at Ramchargers, who built it up a bit. It was the 4 seater, but it scooted! It was a very unique car. Trans was a 727 chrysler torque flight, distibuter GM, power steering GM, Carb Ford, etc...

I
That’s what I remember about AMC cars......they were like Frankenstein. A little of GM, Ford and Chrysler in them throughout. I never had one but a friend of mine Dad had a Matador and a Hornet during the fuel crunch years. The Matador did have a 390 which I think was a Ford block. It was a land barge though.......and UGLY :U :U Always liked the look of the AMX.

As to Nash/Rambler/AMC (beep beep) winning the Trans Am in 1971. That's true. But GM and Ford had both pulled out by 1971. So the only competiton they met was privately-owned Z-28 and Boss cars.
As to the Matador at NASCAR... Not exactly a major force in that orgnaization.

It was very light in the back end what with a V8 up front. It was basically uncontrollable in the snow. A bit like a 1980s 5.0L Mustang.
