Numbers matching 73-454 Reborn
Well I called a local engine rebuilder regarding the 73-454 short block that I purchased with the idea of having it re-stamped to match the vin. He said that this was a common practice by almost all of the restores. He will rebuild and re-stamp the short block for around $400.00 CND. If any of you still have an issue with what I am doing I suggest to check out this months “ Performance Pontiac” magazine there is a great article on this topic by a Restorer in the Florida area. At this point I can enjoy the high performance 454 in the vette and a rebuild numbers matching short block on the self.

As long as you don't sell it as numbers matching which I bet is happening more and more. Main reason I would not buy one along with not caring. :)

Matching Numbers is a gauranteed 5% increase at the fly wheel. Almost as many HP as those ricers get for those big spoilers.

Ok... here is a serious answer: I dont get it! Does it make you feel better having a so-called "numbers matching" NOM? Will you now be unashamed to pop your hood at the car show? If I stamped a number on a NOM it would probably be my social security #. I also like the guy who stamped the words "ORIGINAL ENGINE" on his NOM ! Do you really think this will increase the market value of your car? We will be watching ebay... keep us posted. MJ

It's fine as long as you own it.
It's fine as long as you tell the person you sell it too.
But I guarentee you this, the person you sell it to will resell it someday as a matching numbers car, and it isn't! JMO!!

Well it won't be #'s matching. It will just appear that way. If that's enough to make you smile then  . Trying to pass the car off on someone else as #'s matching would be wrong in my book. But if a magazine says it's okay then it must be. :skep:

Vette Vues had an article about this subject, and it's NOT ok with them. I'll dig around for it and post it tomorrow.

coincidence??
No way!
I'll be absolutely sure when I see his "would you tattoo your matching numbers on your wife's rear" poll.

I know a guy in Toronto who has done this to vettes that he has sold as numbers matching cars - met him while I was on the hunt for a vette over 4 years ago, and he was proud as anything to tell me this. He told me the process that the shop he uses for it goes through, with acid etc. but bottom line he told me that ppl. who really knew would spot the change. This topic has come up in many different forms here over the last few years - ie. "does it seem that every vette sold on eBay is an LT-1". Do what you want but pls. don't try to pass this off as a number's car if you sell it.

If you are restoring the car to NRCS standards you need the stamp pad to match your car and if you are restoring the car then it is not fraud in my book
I also wouldnd pay some of the prices that some people will for a cough numbers matching motor!
The fact is there are more than one shop out there that can give you your numbers matching motor with correct factory broach marks for the right price!
so just be weary when you buy your next car people!
dont bust on him because if this is what he wants to do then he is going to do it..

I never have and never will comprehend the "numbers matching" thing. Really, what difference does it make?

Re: Numbers matching 73-454 Reborn (OHSIXX)
It makes a difference for the same reason that anything else about your car makes a difference--it makes it cooler to you or someone else. Matching #s is one of many things that makes a car rarer than other cars, and so more desirable to someone who is into that sort of thing. What difference does an unopened box make on an antique toy? Beats the heck out of me, but to collectors, that's gold.
Bottom line, things are worth what people will pay for them. People will pay more for matching #s because a lot of cars don't have them. Of course, what they THINK they're paying for is an original block. So restamping the engine is just plain fraud IMHO, whether the law thinks so or not. No different than altering a collectable postage stamp to make it look like a rarer stamp.

73-454/TorontoC-3/454-73 - a troll by any other name....... :troll :troll :troll
You will try to sell it as a numbers matching '73 454 because you have already tried to sell it for a year now. That makes you a fraud.
Maybe you will smarten up and try to use another completley different name next time you sign up. :troll :troll
