Default Off Topic - Volvo rant...

My daily driver is 99 Volvo. More parts have been changed on this piece of junk than my 30 year old Corvette.

So now its burning oil. Like to the tune of 10 quarts in 20k miles. The car only has 80k miles on it. I bring it to the dealer. They say "Well, thats a little high. Volve allows .7 quarts per 1000 miles."

I say, "Well if you recommend changing oil every 7500 miles, there will be none left at that rate."

He says, "Just keep topping it off until you have to change it."

I say, "Why change it if I just put it in?"

Then he calls me "difficult" and gets his manager. Obviously no progress is made from this point.

I guess its time to go buy Camry or something.

Buy a Chevy. Foreign cars are overrated and overpriced! And the dealers tend to be arrogant...

And yes, I've owned foreign cars, but now I have a Jeep, a Ford ... and a Chevy! :flag

I had two Volvo's, both new, the latter being a '96 850 wagon (now the V70). Very solid, but servicing costs, small dealer network and high price vs competition would keep me from buying another one. Presently drive a 2000 4Runner (way better and cheaper than the Volvo). Also recommend many domestic cars/trucks. Domestics have come a long way in both quality and value. My brother swears by his Mercedes sport ute because "it's built in Germany". He knows little about cars beyond the emblem (status junkie). He turned pale when I informed him that my (then) Jeep and his Merc. were built by the same company in the same country, that being the USA!

So you pick your car up and they have installed one of those IV bag drip things that keeps your oil topped off while you drive! :)

We have a 92 volvo 740 wagon with only 95k miles. Car has been ok, but recently developed an intermittent stall. Can be fine for a week or more, but then will stall while under power! Very disconcerting, and nearly impossible to diagnose, because it is intermittent. In a way, car is actually unsafe to drive, but if problem was found car would be fine... :banghead:

Your stall could very likely be the fuel pump (been there, done that). But wait till you find out how much it's gonna cost to replace!!!

It took me 20 years to get my dad out of Volvos. They were decent cars, but they needed regular infusions of gold plated parts that came (slowly) from a frozen wasteland by sled dog! Now he drives Subarus, as well as my mother-in-law, my wife and her sister. As the resident mechanic, my life is much easier. Legacys rule, baby!

I have a 1990 Volvo 740. GREAT DAILY DRIVER. Over 250,000 miles. I had to replace the clutch and timing chain at 200,000 miles. Burns no oil. I still drive it simply because I wonder if it will outlive me. I have heard the newer Volvo are getting a little too fancy. Thus, I suspected that they would be more troublesome.

That is horrible. My wife has a 97 850 with about 56000 miles on it. We bought the car new and the only problem we had with it was a bad alternator during the first 5000 miles. We called the auto club that came with the car and they towed it on a flatbed to the dealer. I agree with you, there is something wrong with yours. That is a shame, I hope we dont have problems similar to yours. Did you buy yours new?

I've got a 95 960 with 98,000. I bought it with about 70,000 on it and have had very little problems. I have found the parts to be expensive but most newer cars cost more in parts. Heck my 99 Grand Cherokee had 2 power door lock actuators fail at 50,000 miles. Each actuator was $75.00  I still think an average Volvo will out live most USA made cars. With that being said I have always owned American made cars and still argue with my buddy who only drive BMW, Mercedes, Porshe type cars. I tell him yes they are better built but cost 2x what an American car will cost. My next car is a Cadillac STS :steering:

P.S A good Volvo only website is http://www.brickboard.com. You can see if others are having this problem and what resolution they have found.

I've owned many German cars, Bimmers, WV's, Mercs. I really like the quality you get with them. Have you ever thought about gettting a WV Passat with V6 or even W8? Great value for the money. Don't buy Camry!!!! :nono:

Brickboard is a good site for Volvo help. My first Volvo had 250,000 miles on it when I sold it and the only thning I replaced was a water pump, my 95, 960 has 130,000 miles but the timing belt tensioner came off and I bent 18 valves about a month ago. I was out of state and towed to a dealer, it was $3000 for a rebuilt head and other things. The car has never burned more then 1/2 qt of oil every 5000 miles.

Over the decades, foreign badges really don't show me much....
rust is a problem for them too....Volvo is a 6 year car on Long Island....
most of them are unibody construction...I seen too much of that type construction with the lifespan of a Dodge Dart.....fine in the desert...but rust bombs otherwise....less than ten years, anyway....

VW fell apart with the Schirocco series car...engines blew more oil than gas...
same with Civic....
parts are outlandish, stupid alternators cast 400 bux...typically....
BMW/Mercedes have the worst seats in the pack...Volvo is good on that account....
I would NOT have 4WD from any source....just give me RWD and posi...be done with it...learn how to drive....

I did own a volvo 4 cyl 2100cc boat with I/O once....damn thing responded well to DPFE conversion...ran it with a GM computer....doubled my fuel economy....ran an entire day on a tankful....instead of having to stop at noon....

Maybe you Volvo owners should send after spareparts from Sweden as we do for our american cars.

The Volvos and Saabs are really popular to mod here in Sweden.Theres a Volvo 850 that does the 1/4 in high 11`s..FWD.Not bad for a Volvo

I have that pic as a screen saver at work! I've had two Volvo's over my years of owning cars and have never had that kind of problem. Presently I have an '89 Mercedes that has 262K and still running strong. There is something definately wrong if it's burning oil at that rate. Could be as simple as valve seals. Good luck! :seeya

Brought it to another dealer... they determined it was a clogged filter (not the screw-on one, but something else up around the intake manifold) that was causing an increased pressure. The gasket on the oil housing blew.

Overall, probably a $700 job. Needs a compression test too just to check the valve seals are still ok.

Damn, this is going to slow progress on the 400SBC project.
