Default WHAT IS THIS STUFF?????

He guys, I just finished making a new set of custom floor pans for my 77 and i'm about a day or two from welding them in place.

Problem, What is the stuff the GM used to seal the pans between the fiberglass firewall and the metal floor pans.

Also, where can i find this stuff and/or is there a better product to use.

coming guys group hug :grouphug:

Well, I have the 'glass floors - so I'm not positive, but ....

The metal to 'glass bonding that is done from firewall to birdcage should be the same.
When dissasembling mine, I have found that two adhesive/sealers were used.
One is (I believe) a urethane adhesive. It is a cream color and sets up firm
but flexible. Additionally, there is a sealer that is used alongside this adhesive.
The sealer is black and resembles the same stuff used to seal around the
windshield and the windshield moulding/trim. It is similar (if not identical) to
the butyl rubber caulking that has been mentioned previously in windshield
seal posts - readily available at NAPA - and other fine auto parts stores.

Are the floors held to firewall with 3/16 pop rivets - like the BC to firewall ?
.. or is the adhesive/sealer the only attaching medium (bonded seam) ??

You know, :leaving: , i never expected anybody to post the pic of my blue parts hauler around on the forum. I myself got a good laugh :D .

Dave, the firewall to floor boards are attached via rivets with the seal/adhiesive in between them. It is greyish black in color.

Grayish black in color - and it is not hard, right ?
I think it is essentially the same stuff that is used in the windshield area
as stated before. There are probably many products that would seal that
up good.

I suggest finding a parts or body supply store that can recommend a
flexible non-hardening body sealer for your application. Something like the
non-hardening permatex gasket sealer would even work well, but try to
find a place that can get you the sealer for your application before going to
any crazy extremes.

It's semi-hard. D#@* hard to get off the floor pans and fire wall.
I think you guys are right though, i think it similar to the stuff that hold the wind shield in. I'll go by NAPA and Autozone in the next couple of days.

Some of my "metal car" buds use a product called "seam sealer". Comes in a tub...is applied with a brush as I remember. You might ask at your supplier. Chuck
