Default Whad'ya think? No A/C in your Shark

Hey guys! I'm thinking about picking up another shark, but it doesn't have A/C. Not that I really care, but if I go to sell it sometime later on (the wife will only let me have so many Corvettes - maybe she'll drive this one?) would another buyer pass on a shark because it doesn't have air?

Let me know your thoughts. Thanks, GM

I might buy a ragtop w/o air but not a t-top. In the summer I pull the tops off and run the a/c full blast.

My wife would never go for a car without air. She don't care what it cost- I better make sure the air works! There is some difference if a car came from the factory without a/c verses a car that had it and someone took it out because of the vents. A car that had air doesn't have open vents at the floor for outside air to come in so all you get is recirculated hot air with the fan on high.

If my wife wants another Corvette, 4 speed only, she don't care about A/C :chevy  :steering:

But the Cars without A/C are much easier to work on......

It gets pretty hot even with the ragtop down. Air would be nice, but someone forgot to order it when new. Oh well.

I personally could care less about A/C, even though my vette is daily driven in the summer. My car originally had A/C but I took it out because it didn't work and it took some weight off the car too. Even during the summer when temps can into the mid 90's here, I take the T-tops off and put the windows down and I'm perfectly fine  . Even if I was buying a #'s matching big block, I wouldn't want A/C because of the cost and I really don't use it.

PS, I also have thermal coated headers which cut the interior temp greatly after being installed.

Hey Guy!

I'd say it has to do with what year and model. AC probably won't be as important in the resale if the car your looking at has chrome bumpers and a big block, but if it's a more typical C3 with a base 350, the future buyer will probably want to drive the car and AC in the midwest is a must so your resale market will be smaller IMO.

I don`t have AC on my convertible and believe me it gets hot in the heat of the summer. I usually go out early or late and avoid the heat of the sun. AC will add to the selling price if it is a bumper car though, especially a vert.

Being in FLA, I looked high and low for an A/C vette. Finally found one with working A/C and guess what...it don't do s#*t! The combination of engine/exhaust heat + FLA sun beating through the un-lined top made the car unbearable even with A/C at full blast.

As it turns out, I only have time to drive the car at night and maybe, if I'm lucky, one weekend day a month. If it's too hot outside, I just don't take it out. Otherwise, top is down and A/C is off...removing compressor drive belt as we speak.

I agree with 74-Roadster - if you're looking for a potential resale, not to mention your own comfort in Tulsa in the summer, find a car with a/c. Mine has every stinkin' option on it EXCEPT air, and I'd trade all of them for a cool blast of a/c on a hot day... I don't know if I would pass on a car just because it didn't have air - obviously I didn't - but I was certainly looking for another car when I found this one. If the one you're looking to buy has options like mine but is missing only a/c, resale may not be such a problem. What color is it? That will probably make the biggest difference to a potential buyer.

I wish my AC worked good enough to do some good in the Texas Summer heat, but it doesn't do squat if the car has been parked in the sun for more than 10 minutes. Now if I have had it in the garage and start the car up and get the car cool, before driving it, it will just keep up.
Later this year I'm pulling the dash out and replacing the center plenum and duct work, when I replace the heater core. Hopefully with all the duct work sealed up and tight, I'll get enough air out to do half way keep up.

I always thought GM only left out A/C on the performance vettes until I bought this '74 L-48. Granted, what you see today is a vert, but it is a conversion from a coupe. Everyone has their own opinion... if I thought the car was nice it would not make a difference. It's getting rarer and rarer that you see C-3's, so it's just neat to see one once in awhile that has been taken care of.

By the way... all vettes with sidepipes should not be driven with the windows up unless it is -50 degrees or 4 inches of rain are expected each mile driven.
A/C? Ya don't need it.

:iagree:
Even with A/C in Florida during the summer it can be just too darn hot. I have been thinking of yanking mine out as well.

My car didn't have air before the resto, and man I wish it did at times. I installed the Vintage Air, but haven't got to use it yet. After the many hot summers I spent I think it is was good investment.

I have A/C but I took it off when I started hot rodding the car........I can always put it back on but It DOES add to the value of the car without a doubt

My car does not have air and I cruise it all summer in Louisiana. The best way I handle it is with the t-tops off and the windows down. It works great until you stop or get stuck in traffic, but I can live with a little sweeting then.

My first car was a 1970 240z... 2-60 AC (or 2-120 on HEBailey  )

Anyway... unless I get a vert, my car will always have AC. Even if it can't keep up!

I was driving from Wichita to Stillwater on the 4th of July in 1996 (it was like 110 that day). I was stripped down to just my shorts and sandals and I was sweating like a fat man in line at Krispy Kreme with only $1. Never again... AC would have at least cooled the air a little...

Hmmm - well you know my answer - who needs it ..... but

It surprises me to see people in FL saying the same thing. Huh - I guess we
CAN all get along. :)

I'm also surprised to see that it's a major issue in OK. I've never been to
OK, but I imagined it was normally cool to moderate there. What do I know ?
