Pros and Cons on Chambered Exhaust.
I am thinking about getting the Chambered exhaust system from Ecklers but I have read some negative comments about this system. Is this system worth the money or should I get a custom exhaust job.
Just looking for comments/opinions.

Chambered exhaust sounds bad! Jeff (no-radio) has them on his Vette (not stock). I think he he bought them from someone who bought them through Ecklers. Either way I think it sounds awesome.

I had on a 70 BB coup. TOO loud and hurt HP. Will never use it again. A good set of headers and a 2 1/2 exhaust and good turbo mufflers are a better set. Just my opinion. :) Thad

They do sound pretty good, but are terrible for power production. The internal dimensions are TINY!
Same deal with sidepipes. Same setup internally.
I'd get a good set of 2.5" pipes and aftermarket mufflers.

I also had a set and even though they sounded good, the noise that reverberated through out the car was not very pleasing.I installed repo oem sidepipes and am totally pleased with them.

Put them on mine a few years ago and will leave them on until I find something
that sounds better for less money or I get ticketed. As for performance I had
headers on it when I took off mufflers and installed chamber pipes from MAD
so the difference was not noticable.I will say that seat of the pants feeling is
it's better than stock. I'd have to dyno it to SEE the difference, it ain't worth it.
It may be just the sound that makes me think it's faster. Don't care I like it.
Didn't buy the car for someone else to like, just me. Steve

If I am going to get a custom system, will 3" pipes fit through the cross-member holes without rubbing them?

3 inch will fit in the holes. It is tight but I have seen it done a couple of times. Unless you are pushing over 500 HP the 2 1/2 should be OK

Re: Pros and Cons on Chambered Exhaust. (Gordonm)
Gordonm,
That is my concern. I have never had the car on a dyno, but knowing how the car runs and it's 1/4 times, I may be on the edge of 500 hp. That is why I am not only looking at sound but flow as well. I have heard of people putting 3" on, but have never seen one in person. Does this require any grinding or cutting to get the pipes through?

why not a custom crossmemeber? I think norval did something slick with his, maybe got rid of the holes all together, just a flat piece of steel above,
1111'''''''111111'''''11111 Instead of 11110111111101111
... my fatal attempt at gettin a point across
