Just a little question that started ****ling me.

Anyways, the old exhaust on my vette was referred to as "turbo mufflers" before I installed the Dynomax Super Turbos(which are obviously also "turbo mufflers"). What exactly is a turbo muffler?

Is it a muffler in which the exhaust flows back, curves around, flows forward, curves, and flows back again?

Like that...

They are called 'turbo' mufflers because of the little mini turbo inside them that forced the exhaust gases out! Jeez, you gotta tell some people everything! :rolleyes:

I think they're just lower restriction versions of a standard reverse flow muffler. The "original" turbo mufflers were used on turbocharged Corvairs. Because the plumbing for the turbocharger helped mute the exhaust sounds, they were able to get by with mufflers that were less restrictive but also less efficient at reducing sound. Before the aftermarket jumped on the bandwagon, they sold well at the Chevy parts counter. I think I paid something like $7 apiece for some in `69. Mopar Hemi mufflers were also famed for being low restriction but they were much larger, heavier, and they cost about three times as much as the Corvair replacement muffler.

I think it's because marketing thought "Turbo" and "Jet" were catchy names. BTW, `65 was a very big year for new introductions at GM. Besides the Turbojet rats, the Quadrajet carb and the Turbo 400 tranny was introduced. I think it was also the first year that the 12 bolt rear was used in passenger cars. Does anyone know if the "Turbofire" name was used for the SB's prior to `65? I'm thinking that it was but I'm not sure.

:iagree: That's right, in the 60's youcould walk into your local chevy dealer and ask for a couple of "turbo" mufflers and they would plunk down turbocharged corvair mufflers.
In 1962 Chevrolet and Oldsmobile introduced turbocharged versions of the corvair and the F-85 Cutlass. The Cutlas Jetfire featured an all aluminum 215 cu.in. V8. :eek:

Turbo type muff's have two (2) bends for exhaust gas flow, standard muff's have three (3).

The interesting thing is names for all the transmissions...

Powerglide, Turbohydramatic 350, 400, 700R4, Dynaflow...

Ford's sounded remotely normal: "C4, C6".

Chrysler :) 727 "TorqueFlite", that's gotta take the cake...

Actually, Ford didn't advertise C4-C6. They were called "Cruiseamatic" (or was that CruiseOmatic?). Something I left out from my previous post was that as early as `57, Chevy had a "Turboglide" 3 spd auto. I'm not certain but I think it was a version of the Buick DynaFlow.

PS Have a muffler test which included the turbo & Hemi mufflers, early Walker, etc. The winner was Cyclone now Dynomax.

I remember late 60s early 70s Thrush introduced their version of the turbo muffler called the Thrush Hush, I had a tunnel rammed big block '69 Nova street fighter and it was the first time I could hear the lifter clatter :lol:

I kinda thoght they also had a turbo"ish" sound to them too for that reason I did not like them that much :D

Yellow 72 has it correct. Corvair turbo mufflers started the craze. 2 1/2" inlet and outlet. Not much back pressure. A lot of coptycats made them but if you look inside the ends you will see that the 2 1/2" pipe narrows down to 2" (the real turbo's did not narrow).
