need your opinion on this rim size
ok, i own a 81 and im looking at a set of centerline rims style 454 the chorme lancer. i want it in 17x8 and they have the right bolt cir. 5x 4.75 the only problum is that they have a 5" back space. i know its spose to be 4" on a 8 inch wheel. the people at centerline say it will hit the caliper, but i think there full of crap. if its a 17" rim that means its a inch higher than stock all the way around, and then you move it in 1 inch because of the 5" back space. wouldnt that put it in the same spot the stock wheel is in now? what do you alll think? also even if it was still to gonna touch i could still use a spacer right. so if it comes down to that, where should i get the spacer's and the studs? thanks for the help. :steering:

You do NOT want a spacer, too dangerous...not legal on race tracks for good reason...you want a wheel adaptor...expensive...and takes TEN lugs nuts per wheel....one set to the hub, then wheel to adaptor interleaved with original 5 studs......so the adaptor has ten holes drilled in it.....every other one filled with a stud.....best as I can describe it....
second off, the wheels will not hit the caliper with proper adaptor in place....but you gotta calculate the offsets and do the math....
some mag wheels will hit the calipers on the side...rub the spokes....that's what they talking about....usually....NOT the wheel diameter....

They probably didn't mean that the caliper would hit the rim on the OD, but rather the backsides of the "spokes"....

I got mine machined by a guy in Memphis. It was $200 for a set of 4. I'll get his name and emal adress if you want. Below is a pick of my wheels and an adapter laying in the floor.

yes please give me his number, did you have to tell him the excate demenshions to make the adapter, or does he know already just from the bolt patteren and dam how thick are thoses adapters of yours. also i just thought about the adapters in the mid america/ ecklers mag that let you put on 84-96 vette wheels on your C3. do you know what size bolt patteren they had (84-96). thanks for the help :seeya

Re: need your opinion on this rim size (gravismaximus)
another thing i just thought of, am i right? when using adapters the holes without the studs would go over your stock studs and be tightened so that the adapter is tightened to the hub. then the studs on the adapter would be used to mount your new wheels. my question is, wouldn't the lug nuts holding on the adapter touch the back of the wheels, instead of the face of the adapter. or do you use really small lugnuts so that they are counterbored into the adaters so the mounting surface of the wheel meets with the face of the adapter. just woundering,

Re: need your opinion on this rim size (gravismaximus)
He will make them to suit what you need. Your car has a 5 x 4-3/4" pattern. If you check your studs they should be less than 1-1/4" long. He makes a standard minimum of 1-1/4" thick adapters, up to any thickness you need to suit the backspace on your new wheels. Mine are machined to 1" thick and I had to shorten my studs by about an 1/8th" That still gives you more thread than you have lug nut. The adapters are counter bored sufficient to fully recess the original lug nuts so no, they won't hit the back of your wheel.

Those are some nice tires and wheels you have there. Can you tell me what are the widest tire we can get for a 15" rim? Not a drag radial just a normal street tire. I know of the 295-50, but is there anything bigger?

Center Line made my 17"X8" rims and they fit perfect without any spacers.......I didn't want spacers because of the NHRA rules.....They also would not allow slicks unless I change to longer wheel studs.....hence the MT ET Streets.....Same as a slick with groves cut into them.....
Call Center Line and tell them you want a rim made up to fit your car..... :seeya Cappy

Re: need your opinion on this rim size (8T1-7T9 BIONIC VETTE)
I'll probably do that, thanks! Need to get the offset trailing arms on to get a 9.5" or 10" wheel back there first :D
