Default Center guage cluster on a 71. Help please

I am putting the dash back together and thought when I first removed the center guage cluster a year ago that it was broken because it came out in two peices. However after examining it it looks like it is a two peice unit. The guage portion is one peice and the upper vent portion is another and they fit together by tension with tabs on the upper portion sitting in slots of the lower. Is this correct or was it modified? The pictures of the replacement units look like they are one peice. Thanks for the help on this. I am really hoping that nothing is wrong with this one that will save me $150 bucks. :yesnod:

The guage cluster bezel is 1 piece. However you will notice that alot of the bezels that you see will be broken and in 2 pieces. The top section of the bezel is very weak and will break with very little pressure. I blelieve this was designed to absorb impact in the case of an accident. These are very difficut to fix. You can install it in 2 pieces.

Thanks for the info Ed. I was fitting it together and you can't tell that it is in 2 pieces when they are together. Since I am not going the NCRS route I think i will just re pait it and stick it back in. I didn't notice it before I took it out so i doubt if anyone else will. Thanks again.

Make sure you run a wire from one half to the other. This is the ground for your wiper switch.

Does this need to be done even if the 2 peices are touching together metal to metal?

Yes it does, otherwise you may experiance erratic operation of the switch. When I first got my car I went nuts trying to figure out why the wipers would work one time and not the next. When everything is assembled in the dash, its hard to tell if the bezel is broken in two or not.

How do you like the zz4 engine?
