Default Aftermarket water pump & fan question

I was going through a number of catalogs today writing down all the parts I need to buy and have a question about aftermarket water pumps & fans. I noticed in some of the catalogs on water pump notes like:

SBC 55-72(S) Pt# XXXXX1
SBC 69-76(L) Pt# XXXXX2
SBC 72-82 Vette(S) Pt#XXXXX3

What's the difference between XXXXX1 & XXXXX3? Both are short versions.

As far as fans... the clutch version is coming out and Perma-Cool 17" Turbofan is probably going in. What spacer should I use? It appears that 1" would be the same spacing as the stock fan.

In 71 Chevrolet increased the size of the bering and shaft. So from 71 to 82 the pump is different. I dont know why they list the change in 72.
As for the fan spacer, I am not sure of the configuration of that specific fan. Maybe some othe Forum member can help out.

Ed...

Thanks for the reply. I forgot about the shaft size. I was thinking that if I just bought a SB short water pump(weiand) and aftermarket billet pulleys that matched I would be okay. Then I went over to March's website and saw that the waterpump & crank pulley heights are not the same as the standard SBC.

March SBC Pt# 6030 Set
Crank 5 3/4
Water 6 1/4
Alt 2 11/16

March 71-82 Vette Pt# 5030 Set
Crank 5 1/2
Water 6 1/4
Alt 3 1/2

On my 74 I am using the Weiland Team G aluminum pump [8220]. I am also using the March crank and water pump pulleys. I am not sure of the part numbers of the pulleys but everything lines up perfectly.

I went with a short chrome pump fron Summit, and aluminum pulleys.Had quite a hassle getting the power steering pulley right. The stock Vette pump after 1969 went a bit longer than the standard"short pump",as well as the 3/4" shaft diameter pulley shaft,so I had to deal with belt alignment issues. :mad

I hate to spend the extra money if a *short* SBC version will work, but I don't need the hassles. I can get aftermarket billet aluminum pulleys(crank, water pump & alt) & aluminum weiand waterpump(Pt# 8208) for the standard SBC for less than 195 bucks. Go with what will work and I'm out almost $370.

Weiand short SBC water pump #8208 - ~$97.00
Weiand 71-82 Vette water pump #8220 - ~$145.00

Aftermarket billet pulleys(crank, water pump & alt nose) - ~$95.00
March 71-82 Vette pulley set #5030(same) - ~$224.00

I could go with other manufacturers, but I will stick with these.

bgrice:
Weiand pns 8220, 8221, 8222, 8223, & 8241 are TEAM G for sbc
Weiand pns 8208, 8208P, 8240 & 8240P are ACTION PLUS for sbc.

The Team G wps are race pumps.
The Action Plus wps are street-strip pumps.

Either will work on street car ... but Team G is a beefier, higher-performing pump than Action Plus. Same concept applies throughout Weiand line ... Team G is race ... Action Plus is street-strip.

8208 is aluminum street-strip ... 8220 is aluminum race.

more info/specs here: http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/ProdLin...cts/WP/WP.html

BTW, many aftermarket fan clutches come with 3/4" pilot hole but also come w/ a bushing to reduce hole to fit 5/8" pilot shaft. You can also use a common copper plumbing union available at hardware for fifty cents. Some wps have a 3/4" shaft but the pilot is 5/8" ... & some 5/8" piloted pumps actually have a 5/8" shaft. As for spacing ... weiand, mr gasket, & moroso make a shim kit for water pump hub (to adjust spacing of wp hub-to-wp pulley) for $5-$10. Most kits have two 1/16" & one 1/8" shims. With a bushing & a shim kit you can make virtually any short sbc wp fit an sbc C3. Just what I did w/ a 8222 Team G that I got for a song.

I am replacing my non-original engine and need some advice. Didn't the 69 350-350 fan have a clutch? If so, what was its purpose? Since I am attempting to get back in to "stock" shape any idea where I might find a used, correct fan for an L-46?

Burgandy 69...

From all the catalogs I have it appears that all 68-70 vettes had the fan clutch assembly. It appears that the 68-70 are different from the 72-79 assemblies.

jackson...

Thanks for clearing up the water pump issue. I've got a Team G single plane manifold that will be going on this motor and it will be on the drag strip, so I might as well go the best route. I got real close to buying a car trailer today. Common sense says I can wait a few months. Here's the link:

If you have a catalog handy, would it be possible to get a GM part #?

THanks

You can click through either Zip or Ecklers in the left hand margin in the vendors section and get GM original or replacement parts. They are all pretty competitive and I think your best solution rather than attempting to go straight to GM.

Pt#'s at Zip:
Fan Blade - ZIP-M-2524
Fan Clutch - ZIP-M-2531

Pt#'s at Ecklers:
Fan Blade - 23051
Fan Clutch - 23044

Hayden is & has been a major OE & aftermarket manufacturer of fan clutches. Their online/downloadable catalog has tons of specs-dimensions plus a lotta info about how fan clutches work, diagnostics etc.
