Default 1981-82 Owners. Need Pic of Oil Pressure Gauge Install...

At the back of the block, on top, near the distributor. This is one of my usual projects: replacing the clock on my 1979 with an oil temp gauge. I will move the oil pressure gauge from the oil filter area to up top. And put the oil temp sensor near the oil filter. Just as in 1981-82.

Received this adaptor from GM today to go into that plug hole at the back of the block (mine is plugged) and it does not look quite right. The threads look too fine. Need a pic of the sensor also. Thanks.

This sensor goes up to the top.

And this oil temp sensor replaces it near the oil filter.

Paul, the oil pressure sender should have 1/8" NPT (national pipe thread) threads on it. If it does not, you need to get the proper sender. The oil TEMP sender you have is the correct one. The pressure sender for 82 (not sure about the other years) has 3 prongs on it.

Ken,
How do I measure threads? And my pressure sensor has only one lead.

Paul,

I think you have been pondering this project for sometime. I remember reading a thread you posted well over a year ago asking for the wiring instructions on this. I did the same thing a few months back. I picked up a 90 degree adapter for my oil temp gauge from the local auto store for a few bucks. I also have my oil pressure sender at the same location due to a problem with the plug near the oil filter. I can't tell you the thread count as I don't know. I took my oil pressure sender with me to match up the proper threads for the adapter. Good luck!

How about a 77 owner w/ the late Oil Pressure Gauge Installed.
The sender looks right. The only nos. I have are cams, intakes etc.

Looks good. You also need a rt. angle adapter so the pressure sender is horizontal. You only need the one lead pressure sender. The 82 extra 2 leads are probably to cut the el. fuel pump.

Jim,
You're right. I have had the pieces for two years. One of those round-to-it projects. But the intake manifold is coming off in the spring (my oil consumption project) so that's the time to do it. The adaptor in the pic is the one specified in the GM parts book: #9409927. But it has the sensor pointing upward at 45 degrees. And that seems odd; hence my request for a pic. Unfortunately GM parts on-line does not have a graphic of the set-up so I have some difficulty in seeing how all this looks.

Ganey also feels that the sensor should be a 90 degrees or horizontal. So I will the GM part has the correct threads and drop by a local parts store today to see what they have at that angle.

I had mine on top of the block of my 82' and didn't like it. I used a 90 and a 45 degree fitting to get it far enough away from my TPI manifold and it just didn't look good. After breaking the 90 off in the bock I moved it above the oil filter with a T-fitting and a 3/4" extentsion (????) so I could keep my oil temp. sensor. Not sure how accurate my oil temp. sensor is but it works. Don't worry about one prong on your sending unit. The other two prongs for the 82' were for the computer.

the other 2 prongs are for the safety switch. If the pressure is too low it cuts out juice to the fuel pump. You won't need that.

Thanks! I had forgotten that the fuel pump went electric in 1982.

NPT threads should be a little tapered small at the start larger at the end. you can use a ruler to measure the threads if you dont have a thread gage. If your thread pitch is 18 you should have 18 threads per inch. The plug you took out should match the part your putting in just put them side by side to see if the threads line up.

I will certainly check the old and the new side by side. There may be a coarse thread adaptor into the block and a fine thread adaptor into that. If I remember correctly that is the case near the oil filter. In any case I got the 90 degree version today. And a pressure sensor. It was 1/3 of the GM price so what the heck.

The following is the stock setup on my 82, from when I had the intake off and replacing the heads with aluminum.

Thanks! I have downloaded the pic. Is that brass adaptor coming straight out of the block or at an angle. It is difficult to see.

The brass adapter is straight up from the block, and it is something like a 45 degree angle the sender sits at.

So the GM #9409927 adaptor I have is the correct part. Thanks again!
