Hose & Other "To Do" Question
Greetings.
I'm in the middle of my first rebuild and I have a couple perplexing questions. First, I bought a new lower radiator hose to connect my new radiator and water pump. It doesn't have the internal spring like my old one, and I thought I read that you should use a spring. Thoughts?
Secondly, since I have the engine tore down to the block, what else should I be doing/looking for? I'm already replacing the intake, carb, water pump, headers, timing chain & cover, all gaskets & hoses, and having the heads magnafluxed and rebuilt.
(79 L-48 350 SBC)
Thanks, from a mechanical greenhorn. Marc

1. I've run 'em without a spring before, but it's better to have one on the suction side of the water pump to keep the hose from collapsing.
2. New rings and hone the cylinders? You'll probably need a ridge reamer to cut the "lip" at the top of the cylinder. You doin' that? Bearings and seals? You doin' that?

You'll probably need a ridge reamer to cut the "lip" at the top of the cylinder.
If you have a lip/ridge at the top of the cylinder, this means that the cylinder is worn, like an ice cream cone. Wider at the top.
If you only choose to remove the ridge, and hone/install new rings, then the life of the engine will be somewhat shortened.
Two things could happen.
The engine could have some piston noise. (loose at the top)
It could start using oil in a short period of time. Depends on the amount of Cyl wear.
If there is a considerable ridge, then a .020 or .030 over bore should be considered.

Can I buy the spring somewhere? I asked at Schmucks and they had a big questionmark above their heads.
As far as the rings and honing, don't I have to have the block out of the car to get the crank and pistons out?

The best bet is to just find a hose with a spring.

Tron, I got mine at N A P A. It does have the spring in it. Try looking there if there is one in your area. Or you may just have the guys behind the counter look and see if the other ones they have in the back do have the spring in it.
