Are the floats set-up correctly...thermal expansion of the fuel can cause just what you described. As for the timing wasn't it set before you did the carb?

Sounds like a problem with the float bowl... Try adjusting the float level... (those are the screws that are on top of the float bowls).. I'm no carb expert and really don't know how to adjust it right.. I'm sure that somebody here can give you detailed instructions...

yeah the timing was set before, however the cap wasn't tightened down and while putting on chrome valve covers mysteriously everything went haywire.....funny how that could happen, huh? haha

#1 Go to the tech section in this forum for timing your engine they have good advice to get you going the right direction.
#2 Make sure you have no vac leaks when setting up the carb!
#3 Get the floats set-up
#4 Do Idle circuits
#5 Insure the secondary circuits are done....this takes a bit more fiddling.
#6 Take your time and HAVE FUN

I've had years of trouble free - maintenance free - use from my Edelbrock carb.
I can't say that about the Holleys I've owned.

You may have a piece of crud that entered the fuel line during install.
This crud can get caught in the float and force it to stay open.
If adjusting it doesn't help, you may need to dissasemble and clean her out.

ps - an inline fuel filter close to the inlet will help with future fuel line work
that is done between carb and tank.
