People with shift kits-
I recently rebuilt our th-400 with a trans kit (clutches, bands modifications etc.) and the shift is definately "positive"., even when you shift (at Idle) from park to drive the shift is positive and very quick, however I am now noticing
a clunk out of the rear when shifting from park to drive. All the u-joints are new- So I am wondering if it is because the trany shifts so positive, that the rear is "shocked" and making a slight clanck sound because of it! Did you guys notice this with your cars after installing a shift kit?

I would say that I have always had a "clunk" somewhere in the drivetrain when shifting from Park to Drive or Reverse even. I don't think it got any worse when I put my B&M Shift Improver Kit in though or even after it's been in for a while.
Did you change the trans mount?
What is the condition of the differential bushing (by the front yoke)?
The idle isn't too high, is it?

my car did the same thing. I had the trans kit from b&m. the clunk was there before but got much harder when i rebuilt the tranny and put the kit in. I wouldnt worry bout it much. I dont remember what it was, but i think it actually had to do with the front suspention. I think the bushings were worn out. The noise was much worse when i was backing out of my driveway which means i was backing down a hill. hope any of this helps. I would look elsewhere then the tranny though.

The shift kit of whatever variety alters the internal fluid hydraulic shifting pressures. It has nothing to do with slack in the drivetrain components.
