Mechanical Oil Pressure Gauge Tubing....
I don't want to rip apart the dash to put a new line in when I drop my BB. I'm not sure, but I don't think the SB line (connects to block behind the distributor)will reach down to the BB connection(near the oil filter). Can this line be lengthened? Is there another suitable location for the connector on a BB?
Thanks

Hi Len. It's not that hard to replace the line. Kits are available in most of the catalogs. You can "fish" the plastic line through the firewall. You can then take off the drivers side "radio access" panel, and hook up the fitting to the oil pressure gauge. Not a bad job at all. Just be sure that you "snug" the connector on the back of the gauge...not too loose, not too tight. If it leaks, you'll have an oily radio. :) Chuck

I would change that plastic line to something more realiable. My vote is on a steelbraided line. The plasticline becomes very brittle with time and a few months ago there was o post of a forummember that got his carpet destroyed by a faulty oilpress line.. :smash:

I changed mine to copper line after the old plastic line got brittle and snapped. Luckily it snapped under the hood instead of inside the car or that would have been one heck of a mess to clean up. It's not really hard to change...the only thing in the interior I had to remove was the center guage cluster. It's well worth it to change it all out IMO. :yesnod:

Len, I'd suggest going with either the steel braided or a piece of steel tubing instead of copper. Copper will fatigue and crack fairly easily.

Len, If your smallblock line is good you can reuse it like this:
Get the oil adapter plug that goes in near the oil filter, then run the steel line up to the back side of the left head.
Make a little bracket like this and use a double ended compression fitting mounted in it to connect the metal line to the plastic line. The bracket will bolt into the accessory bolt holes on the back of the head.

Re: Mechanical Oil Pressure Gauge Tubing.... (Steve Straus)
Thanks for all the input guys. :yesnod: I like the idea of the SS braided line Smokehouse Steve---anything that doesn't look stock is fine with me.
BUT, I like Steve Straus' idea even better. I'm afraid if I get the gauge panel taken off, I'll start to want new Auto Meter gauges. You know you just can't replace one gauge, then I'll want a speedo & tach to match, and then.....I can see the domino tilting.
