Mufflers for a 79 and a couple of other questions.
Hey folks! I have a couple of stupid questions that have more than likley been beat to death on here but since i'm new on here, here it goes,First on mufflers for my L-48 79. What is the best muffler for the money and has the best sound to go with them? preferabley an aluminized set, I have checked into the Walker Dynomax series and they seem to be in the price range I want to spend ( under 250$ for a pair if possible) What about the Monza type? do they have that good "growl" sound to them? are they worth it?
Second, where is the option sticker for this year? And third what is most likley the rear end ratio for this year (three speed auto) Seems to me by the way it drives it must be around a 4:10?? Thanks! :steering: :flag

Go with the Borlas's I have them on my car and they sound GREAT!! I did not want it to be loud and I wanted a nice sound too! The part number of the Borlas are #40352 and the overall size is 9 1/2" wide x 14" long x 4" thick.. Its 2 1/2 inch pipe size with inlet and outlet offset. The best part is they are all Stainless Steel! Here is my sound clip and a pic.. Check these guys out, its were I got mine.. http://www.royalautoparts.com/

I agree with Slickman and I'd go with the borlas's and if you have an automatic L-48 the rear is 308 ratio. They are easily bought from one of the supporting vendors here.

The reason your car feels like it has a 4.10 is because there's no overdrive -- they were still 3 years in the future back in '79. Takes some getting used to . . . or you'll end up getting an OD tranny, like I did! :D

I had the Dynomax super turbo's on my '77 with the stock 2-1-2 exhaust before I re-did my whole exhaust and went with Flowmaster's, and it sounded pretty mean, but I did have a bigger cam in it, so that helped it out. They should be milder in your application yet give you pretty aggressive, but not annoying sound.

Hey Ryan do me a favor and compare your Super Turbo's to Slickman's Borla's. I want to know of your car sounded anything like his. I like his sound, but something tells me those Borla's weren't cheap.
Slickman, if you don't mind, how much did the mufflers run you? What model number are they?

Thanks guys  I really liked the sound of slickmans for sure! I'm going to check them out. The cats are going too! ;) It has duals on it now, were they an option for that year? because there are two holes in the mid frame that the pipes are going through, Looks factory to me. Now for my one other question where is the option sticker located? I thought it was behind the passenger seat glove box (so to speak)

Simon-- the sound clip quality wasn't that good, but from what I heard, my super turbo's were a little louder, but slightly less deep, and they had a lope to them from the cam.

Re: Mufflers for a 79 and a couple of other questions. (paul79)
Nope, they are both the same. That's a good price, I purchased mine local because I know if I needed to return them because they were the wrong one's, I would not have to go nuts to send them back. I had to do this with my first set of Flowmasters that I was going to try, they were to big and I had to send them back. They got lost in the return shipment, what a nightmare!!

So you just turn them over to get left and right? And the curved pipes back to connect to the Y-pipe are separate pieces? (I note the clamps at the back of the muffler.)
*Edit*-And as best you can would you describe the noise level. Five-litre Mustang, Pontiac Grand Prix or more? Can you listen comfortably to the stereo at 60mph?

Yes, you just have to rotate them for left and right. As far as hearing the stereo, not a problem at all. The noise level is between the Mustang and Pontiac Grand Prix. You can listen to my sound link in my SIG..

Thanks again. They are generic/universal mufflers not designed specifically for the Corvette. Where did you get the correct curved extensions forward to the Y-pipe and the clamp-on tips at the back?

I purchased a new pipe setup from Corvette Central from the mufflers to the exhaust manifolds. The tips came with the new pipe system, I just polished them up :)

I have sent an e-mail to the vendor to see if they can supply the extensions to the Y-pipe and the tips.

My 79 L-48 came with 3.55s. As soon as the weather gets better the 200 4R is going in. I still have a set of 4.56s from the old days that might find there way in. With the OD it will still be better than the 3.55s and no OD.
