Default Who has the highest horsepower ZZ4?

They seem very popular as a crate motor choice and seem capable of some pretty good hp/tq numbers.Met a guy with an 81 tonight at a parade with a ZZ4 and he seems really pleased with it thus far. just wondering what are some of the numbers people are getting out of them? Are U using the heads provided(aluminum right)? How about roller cams? Intake manifold and fuel injection on mid 70's sharks? Are they easy to modify in the first place!

They're as easy to modify as any other SBC :p:

I don't have any HP number yet on mine. I'm going to take it to the dyno this spring and I will post the results. So far I've done:
1) Lightly ported the heads - just cleaned up the ports and reduced the material around the valve guides
2) Changed to Manley Race Flow Valves
3) Aluminum low drag water pump from Moroso
4) Holley 750cfm mech. secondary carb with K&N 14x3" aircleaner
5) GM's Hot Cam with 1.6 roller rockers
6) AFR Rev Kit - Basically helper springs to help reduce valve float; allowing higher RPM's

I'm sure its not the highest HP ZZ4 on here, but it is my street car that I use for crusing & Sunday drives. Just didn't want a stock C5 to outrun me.

Ghostrider has a 1980 ZZ4 700R4 that put out 260rwhp at the dyno this summer and it wasn't pre-tuned. Thats about 325 net hp or 400 gross hp.

I probably have the lowest hp ZZ4 :D I'm running a very small Holley carb, only about 475cfm. It performs great at the bottom end, but you can tell it at the top. I have a 650 Holley DP that I want to use, but I'm having trouble finding an air cleaner base that will fit it. I've tried 3 different 14" bases and none of them fit, the electric choke hits the bottom on all of them. I've got a replica stock drop-base that I'm thinking about cutting a hole in the bottom of it so the choke pot will stick up inside the air cleaner so it'll fit.
The upside of the small carb is great fuel mileage, I got over 18 mpg at 70 mph over a 120 mile hiway trip.

Mine dynoed at 397HP out of the car. That's with the LT4 HOT Cam kit installed and a new Edelbrock 1904 QJ set up for the motor. I plan on getting a rear wheel reading once the motor is in the car within the next couple of weeks.

I've got the 670 Avenger with electric chock...I used a K&N drop base with no clearance problems. I could probably get the part number if you need it.

I've tried the K&N and it wouldn't fit either. The problem is the configuration of the top of the carb it's either the dual fuel lines, the linkage or the choke that interfere with one of the bases. About the only one I haven't tried is the little triangular shaped one that Edelbrock sells. Like I said in the original reply if I cut off the tube going to the aircleaner from the valve cover, and cut a slot out of the base for the choke then the original type base would work.

I have a stock zz4 (355HP) and then the hotcam (394HP) and then NOS super powershot +150 (544), but thats only if i decide to shoot it that much and thats not too streetable :smash:
I still have to figure on for more HP for stuff like, elec fans, side pipes, underdrive pulleys.

So its probably not the highest, but with the nitrous it makes some good HP.

Mine dynoed at 397HP out of the car. That's with the LT4 HOT Cam kit installed and a new Edelbrock 1906 QJ set up for the motor. I plan on getting a rear wheel reading once the motor is in the car within the next couple of weeks.
That is very interesting I hope you post the results of the RWHP, you are the first I have seen to do this and we can finally see some real world numbers. The difference between gross, net and rear wheel horsepower is a constant topic of discussion around here.

What was added to the motor when you dynoed it. FOr example did they use race stepped headers and forced induction or just ordinary headers and nothing on the carb ? Any other accessories bolted on when it was dynoed, like alternator, water pump etc. ?

Can't wait to see the results :D

Ken, does your Avenger engage the choke everytime you start the car, even when warm? I have the 670 on a project of mine and it works fine. Just annoys me that even when warm the choke comes on for maybe 30 seconds or so after starting. I have it adjusted as much as possible but no luck.

Thanks

I removed the limiting pin on the chock so i could adjust it leaner. It seems fine now.

K&N does offer a couple of different drop base filters. The deepest one will not work with an electric choke. The drop base I bought works fine. Off hand I don't recall the amount of drop. Good luck.

Chevy High Performance made a motor out of the ZZ4 called the Gladiator, dynoed at 527hp (I think, the 7 is probably the variable). All they used was the shortblock in the end I guess. Has done over 20 dyno pulls without fail.

They ran it with the carb (which now that the paperwork's in front of me is a 1904 not a 1906 like I posted and will edit) the MSD tach drive distributor and 6AL box. I'm not sure about what headers they used though. They're not listed on the paperwork and I couldn't tell you by watching the video.

I have not been to the track or dyno since mods to my ZZ4 as the car is up on jacks getting ready to have the body pulled but DD2000 shows 444hp with my current setup. Might be a little more because I have ported and polished my 6085 heads and I believe DD2000 uses 6085 stock flow numbers. It would be nice to finish the car and get it to a dyno to see some real RWHP numbers.

My outa the box ZZ4 put down 286 hp, and 324 torque @ carlisle this year.

I'll have to strap it to the Dyno again soon because I've done a little more fine tunning to it since then. (and put on a 100 shot of N20!!! :D)

My set up is Holley 750, Hooker Sidepipes w/JCL's Spiral Turbo Baffles, MSD 6A, MSD Pro Billet Dist.

Just Enough to get me in the 12's!!!!!

Default Re: Who has the highest horsepower ZZ4? (patsnitrovette)

the idea of building your own ZZ4 "clone" is intriguing! Do people who do this get a new block or magnaflux thier original one and start from there. I may have my original block done this way as i feel the block is still in good order. However, i want a roller cam and understand that is a big( $$$) deal. Whats ben the cost/reward ratio for a ZZ4"clone"?
