383 owners...check in here!!
I've made a decision on what to build for my 76. A good friend of mine owns a machine shop. We've been discussing building a 383. Conversations this past weekend revolved around Vortec heads (iron), hydraulic roller cams, roller rockers, stall convertors, etc. Initial ideas are for 375 HP or greater.
I know that some of you have your engine mods in your sigs, but some don't.
Please share what components you used in your build ups. Cam size & brand, HP/TQ figures, stall convertor size, tire size, 1/4 mile ET's, etc.
Any info and opinions will be greatly appreciated.

Check here for my new 383.
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=461061
no hp/tq numbers. someone swiped my DD2000 before I could load it at home.
Chris
PS...if you can, get a late model roller cam block with four bolt main. About $600 new, $350 used if you can find em.

Why build a 383 when a 396 costs the same? I'm with Chris. I used better parts and it cost allot more than a crate motor. But I really believe that you get what you pay for. I don't have to worry about what some guys profit margin is.

Re: 383 owners...check in here!! (gkull)
I haven't done my 383 yet, but I know exactly what I will buy/have already bought (see my sig). I using the original 350 block, have it turned into a 4 bolt main, AFR 190cc aluminum heads, completly forged bottom end with 10.5:1 compression flat top pistons (from Custom Design Performance in Connecticut), Holley Street Avenger 670 (may go to the 770 if I get the bigger cam), Comp Cams 268XE (may move to 274XE), 1.6 roller rockers, and an AFR proflow intake port matched to the heads. When I ran it on Desktop Dyno with the 670 and 268XE, I got 400hp @5800 rpm, and 440 ft /lbs @4000 rpm, with the 18% driveline loss with the 4 speed, it comes to about 330 RWHP, and 361 RWTQ. This is before the 150 shot of ntirous though :D .

Re: 383 owners...check in here!! (DaBo)
Mine is in my Sig. I also believe in using better parts. Mine is all forged , maybe overkill, but I don't think it will break easy. My numbers are prior to the JCL inserts which I believe added 30 or so RWHP... My times are prior to line lock and I spin a Lot....

Re: 383 owners...check in here!! (Clink69)
Also, check out AFR's website, airflowresearch.com, and check out their dyno sheets, they have chevy 383 making 517ft/lbs and 503 hp on pump gas!!!!
Clink69-- How do you like your line lock? Who makes it? I was looking into buying the one made by Hurst in the Jeg's catalog.

Re: 383 owners...check in here!! (DaBo)
DaBO,
383 with Scat crank, Manley 4340 H-beam rods, TRW flattop pistons. Shim gasket gives 11 to 1 compression with ProAction 220 cc heads (iron).
Heads and intake gasket matched to FelPro #1206 (medium race port intake).
Comp Cams Extreme Energy Solid flat tappet cam Duration adv. 290/298.
This is 252/260 at .050.
Lift is .570/.560 - with 1.6 roller rockers on intake side, 1.5 RR exhaust.
Lash loops proved .014 intake and .018 exh. runs best.
Carb is currently Holley 830 CFM with downdraft boosters - 84 jets all 4 corners, 8.5 Power valve.
Believe it or not, car loves Edelbrock Performer RPM dual plane intake with 1" spacer.
Had this combo on rear wheel dyno at HotRod power tour using a way-wrong Holley 750 carb (the needle and seat was hung up) and it still produced 376 RWHP at 5,700 RPM and 408 RWTQ at 3,700 RPM.
1966 Corvette ran 12.43 at 114.22 MPH at Bowling Green Nats - in 101 degree heat on a 2.07 - 60' time. Clutch was slipping something awful - gee whiz, those 8.5" slicks deep sixed my Hayes street clutch - oops !
I believe it's capable of 11.80's on a good track with nice cool weather (60-65 degrees)
No video, but it was this past summer - car is Nassau Blue - you might remember it if you were there.
I recommend a 4-bolt block, the best 6" rods you can afford, and a trustworthy machine shop. Make sure you get a setup that will balance internally (Scat crank will) because Mallory metal ain't cheap.
Good luck, and hold on to your hat - 383's honk. OBTW - I do not care for the rod angularity inherent in the 396 motors (3.85 stroke), although $$ can solve the worries - just use unobtainium crank and rods.

I actually posted the performance of my engine but not the specs...
here we go:
350 block - bored .030 over / zero decked
400 steel stroker crank
LT-1 Rods
Speedpro Pistons
64 cc DART IRON EAGLE Heads w/ 215cc runners and blended bowls (blended to 68cc)
Custom SOLID CAM, .525/.540 lift 238/248 degrees .050 duration and 106 degrees centerline
LUNATI Roller Rockers 1.5 ratio
CR.. anywhere from 9.8 to 10.3... (depends on how much the bowl was actually blended... If it's really 68cc - the CR would be 10.25 : 1
Intake:
Fully ported and matched Edelbrock Tarantula (TM-1) (HP version of original Torker)
Carb:
Holley 80528 750 double pumper - mech. secondaries
(750 Drag Race carb) currently with 72 primary/82 secondary jets

You should say what you want. It sounds like a mild 383 which will run like a bb 427/435HP. Roller rockers & high stall are not needed for that...

Re: 383 owners...check in here!! (Ganey)
Thanks for all of the ideas guys...Keep them coming. When this slows down I will print it out and have LOTS of ideas to build from. He builds engines for a living and has been doing it for the last 6-8 years. Within the past few months, he has built 2-3 engines similar to what I want, but they have been TPI or TBI engines.
My first 383 was back in 1988 in my 70 Chevelle. 4 speed...4.56 gears...LOADS of fun. It was later put into a 76 Sunbird (Monza).
I am looking forward to taking advantage of the latest technology in heads, cam, intake, etc. I didn't have near the choices back then as I do now. It was hard enough to even find a stroker kit back then.
Thanks again for all your input.

This rotating assy: http://www.sallee-chevrolet.com/Scat...mbly_Kits.html (internally balanced with 6" rods!)
This cam:
Competition cams xr282hr (in kit form with rollers, pushrods, springs...)
These rockers: http://www.compcams.com/information/...gnumRoller.asp
Vortec heads with comp cams springs, new guides (because of higher spring rates), enlongated rod slots, MINOR pocket porting.
Windage screen
Should be good for ~475 horsepower & 450lb/ft tq.
If you're interested, I can recommend a very good book for this buildup.

Re: 383 owners...check in here!! (bzcarguy)
Mine is a bit "tamer" so to be smog legal. My '76 already had a new Turbo 350 and even though I wish it was a 400, I figured I'd build the most motor I could, using the 350 without a stall convertor, and remain smog legal ... as I need to for a couple more years :smash:
Mine is a 4-bolt main block and I'm using cast iron 1.94 heads. The cam is a Crane with Crane roller rockers (but the cam is flat tappet hydraulic). Here are the cam specs: http://dab7.cranecams.com/SpecCard/D....asp?PN=113942
It has an Eagle forged stroker kit, and the block is .040 over. I had the radiator recored with a high efficiency core and am using a 7-quart Milodon pan designed specifically for a stroker  I am using coated headers and 2.5 inch exhaust with UltraFlow mufflers and a free-flow cat. Ign is factory GM HEI for now.
So far, it only has 250 miles on it but I'm trying! No perf specs yet but I work at a Dyno Shop and fully expect to get some dyno readings by the end of the week.
I have a great, slightly lumpy idle ... whether in gear or out of gear .... and the cam has a California Emissions Legal number! Now, I 've got 3.08 gears so it takes a lotta torque to move a 3850 pound car fast. At lower rpm range it's just sorta, OK. Stick the foot just a couple inches deeper however into the throttle, and it is a completely different animal :D :D
The transition is seamless thanks to the flow bench-matched Performer 795 cfm carb and Performer manifold. Off idle, to 2750 rpm you feel nothing out of the ordinary :yesnod:  :) but if your foot <<<just happens>>> to dip a leeeeetle bit deeeeeeper into the throttle, a couple of things change:
* The sound of the roller rockers gets more pronounced
* The UltraFlow mufflers start Flowing LOTs of NOISE!
* There is an unmistakeable grin on my face!
* The motor LAUNCHES and reaches 5500 TOO FAST!!
If I'm brake-torquing a burnout with the Posi 3.08 rearend, all I need to do is torque it up to 3,000 before releasing the brake. If that. From the time the left foot goes UP and the right foot goes DOWN, the rear tires are burning ... and they are tall tires too! They are 225/70's so combined with tall rear end gears, it is a bit of a task to turn them enough to smoke!
<<Course, I'd never do that.   But I do read about it :yesnod: :yesnod:  :blueangel: :blueangel: :blueangel: :hat >>

Ever owned a stroker?? You will have sounds you need to be familiar with. The motor makes a knock that's faint, but sounds like a rod knock. It's common with strokers and it's the nature of the beast.
But when you get used to all the torque, then all you can do is smile!
