Always interesting to tear an engine down... 3 pronged AC plug?
While I was underneath the car today pulling out the spark plug wires I found this electrical cord that I had not seen before. It was routed through the shields for the wires and tied around the power steering pump. I followed it on up to the firewall and up to the headlights on the driver's side. Low & behold there was a 3 pronged electrical house plug(picture below) at the end of it. This car came out of Canada so I am guessing it probably goes the other way back to the battery as a way of jumping the car in extreme cold weather. Either that or maybe a George Foreman Lean Mean Fat Grilling Machine? I thought I smelled burgers the other day.

A block heater. You see 'em on gasoline engines up here but are much more common on diesel powered trucks & equipment that is stored outdoors. Worth their weight in gold..........if you remember 'em plug in.
It was also included as part of this rare Corvette option package.

Maybe it was a battery heater if it was in that area.

I'm taking the next couple of days off to finish ripping this engine down. I'll post tomorrow where the cord ends up.
As a note... I finally got the intake off this thing today by beating a 14mm 6 point socket onto the middle bolts on each side. Those cast iron intakes weigh a ton. Both the intake & heads on the middle port on each side were almost closed with build-up. You can barely fit a finger in the supposed square hole. No telling what I'm going to run into when I finally tear this thing completely down. I still say.... storing a car for years is the worst thing you can do.

I use the block heater on my diesel K10 anytime it drops below 30 degrees here. It's not really necessary but it takes less time to start (less starter and battery wear) and there's a little heat comin outta the vents too.

bgrice,
Looks like a connection to a block heater. Had them on our cars when we lived in Montana. In the winter, if you didn't plug it in, and the car was outside, you had two choices - tow it to a heated garage and let it warm up, or, wait til spring.

Sure enough... I followed the cord to the side of the engine to find a block warmer. Snip! Don't need that thing. So much for toying with this thing for the week. The new intake(Weiand Single Plane) should be in Thursday along with the Superwinch I ordered. I'll probably delay pulling the motor until next weekend as I have to mount the winch and the car seems to be winning as far as war wounds. Porting/polishing of the intake begins Saturday. Looking foward to that... sitting at the work bench... music... beer... porting & polishing in between beers...
Took one of the heads off today. Jesh... this thing is nasty! The other one has decided to be a pain in the butt as some Bubba rounded one of the header bolts. I'll cut these things off if I have to. The exhaust manifolds are going into the dumpster anyway.
