Default C4 Owner needs info from C3 owners

I want to buy a prostreet 1972 Corvette, He has the Corvette tubbed in the trunk and I want to know if their is any room behind the seats of a 1972 Corvette? Because the rear window slants down at an angle so is it possible that their is enough room behind the seats to put like a case or some luggage?

He has the car tubbed so the trunk is practically useless because he also has a fuel cell back there. COuld you guys help me out. Thanks for any info. :yesnod: :flag

Also since its a pre 1974 Vehicle no emission's apply to this car correct? If so Then I could just go out and get a merlin engine and run it and still be street legal. THat would be straight up cool. :yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod:

How much storage room did the C3 early models 1974 and pre 1974 have in the back? Or was it just filled with a gastank?
DOes anybody got a pic of a luggage rack? :chevy

I can't speak about coupes or modified C3's but I can tell you that my stock '70 convertible has about the same rear storage footprint size as my stock '87 convertible with the tops up. The height of the C4 is about half that of the C3. It's not tall enough to fit a grocery bag standing up, but you can fit one lying down in the '87. You can just about stand one up in the C3 with the top up. With the tops stowed down the '87 looses about half the height of the storage as does the '70. Definately more room in the stock '70 than the stock '87. Also the '70 has 3 storage cubbies in the rear, the '87 convertible does not.

If you go to my husband's website he's got a C2 coupe which has been heavily modified - tube frame chassis, fuel cell, the works. There won't be much room for more than maybe a map pocket in the rear of his when it's done. ;) The chassis on the C2 and C3 are about the same. The bodies and layout are definately different though, so it might not be directly applicable, but might give you a feel for the space (or lack thereof). :D http://corvetteforum.net/classics/gregp/65corvette.htm ~Juliet

Thanks for the info, but how much room in a pre1974 coupe? So if it is tubbed with a fuel cell, that pretty much means, no room

From the back seats to the rear stock is enough room to store the T-tpos on top of each other. abotu 24"x24". If its eubed you won't have any space between the wheel wells and maybe 8" on top of them. Thats all there is.

You don't have much height or depth in a 74 or earlier. I would say you have about 25 to 30 inches in width and about 20 inches in depth. You only have about 18 or 20 inches in height. So if the car is tubbed just subtract those dimensions from the above and you'll see how little space you have. That's why you see a lot of early C3s with luggage racks.

I'm confused  , why are you looking at a pro street vette if you want luggage room. Looking at a C3 for luggage room is like buying a big block for gas mileage, it's not its purpose. there's a lot more room in any C4 coupe then there is in any pre 78 vette coupe. I normally have to throw stuff in my buddy's 65 mustang when we go to car shows becouse nothing fits in mine but one bag and the fire extinquisher with the t-tops behind the seats.

 Alls I have to say is that that prostreet '72 have some big F#$&*^@ tires on the back. They remind me of my old bosses chopped chevy truck/street rod, it has 22" wide slicks on the back :yesnod:

Just put a hitch on the back and buy a trailer that’s safe to 200mph  That sounds like a cool ProStreet Vette. To answer your question, a shaving kit and a change of socks...

I guess it depends on how far the wheel wells have been tubbed in.

The fuel cell shoul dbe mounted where the gas tank was, so that shouldn't
play into the picture. You'ld be crazy to mount the fuel cell inside the
passenger compartment.

I think there is ample room behind the seats in a stock coupe.
I currently have my gas tank stored there, with room left behind.
You can see it in my signature pic - the 70 on the left.

I must agree - a prostreet vette shouldn't be for long trips with luggage.
However, the luggage rack should suffice for such occasions.
Buy it. Just make sure the frame is solid.

The 72 has the popout rear window - so you can take that out and run down
to Home Depot for some 2x4s. Try that with the 84 !!

I say dont buy it.

Its probably more trouble than its worth. My feeling is vettes are G machines and a Pro-Street (Im guessing a solid axle, 4 link, narrowed, and tubbed) probably wont handle they way you would want it to.

Part of the fun of the vette is the handling set-up and the long term cruisability- (if thats a word?)

Go with a C3 big block car if that is your other chioce and start working on setting up the car the way you want it.

You better check again because I know you won't be able to legally register
or drive that car in my former home state. By the way, if the car ever had
smog equipment on it (like when it was originally built) it still needs it!
Ask me how I know this.

Also, if the car originally had a small block in it, you can't legally upgrade it
to a BigBlock. Again, ask me how I know.

I hope your not talking about Texas because my best friend is a certified state inspecter and anything 25 years and older is smog exempt. And yes engine swaps are legal as long as the motor is at least 2 years newer than the vehicle it is going in and the motor has to retain all the fuel injection and smog equipment where applicable. I had a 85 S-10 shortbed/cab with a small block out of a 91 Iroc and had it inspected 2 times in the 3 years I owned it.
