I'm about to replace my power steering pump. Is this a job for a mediocre mechanic or should I have the shop do it? Seems straightforward. Anything to know before starting? Must I bleed the system upon completion?

Yup its quite easy.When your done just fill up the ps pump and do some full turns with the steeringwheel to get out all the air..Then just add some fluid :smash: :cheers:

this job is not really that hard...its just tight as heck down there...
you will have to go under the car to get at one bolt as well as the hoses...
its pretty straight forward...kind of a common sense kind of thing...
as stated above...you will have to bleed it after you install it and fill it the first time...you dont have to drive it to do this...
just start her up and turn your wheel all the way from left stop to right stop, back and forth several times then shut her off and top off the fluid again and your good to go...
be VERY careful not to overfill it or to tighten the belt too tight as this will destroy your new pump...
i like to use the 45* method when adjusting belts instead of the 1/2" method...
i am a great one for overtightening and stripping bolts etc and i have found this method to work well for me...it doesnt really take a lot of tension on a belt for it to work properly...
when you think you have it adjusted to the proper tightness...twist the belt with your fingers and it should turn about 45* without having to strain to twist it further...

Couple of things I do to make the job easier.

1) Remove alternator for access. I just unbolt the bracket from the cylinder head and remove as a unit.

2) Remove PS pump by unbolting backet from block and removing as a unit. I found this to be a lot easier than removing the pump from the bracket in the car.

3) When reinstalling, I place the alt/water pump belt over the water pump and crank, then install the PS pump with its belt. This way, I can leave the alternator till last for improved access.

Good luck. I just did mine but the car is still sidelined till my new control valve get here (hopefully Monday). :(

One other thing if you put the front on jack stands it will be much easier to remove and replace the lines from the bottom of the car.

Anybody replace theirs with an aftermarket unit that includes the reservoir ? I read that about the only problem with the Steeroids kit is that it generates heat during hard driving and that the solution is a ps pump with the reservoir.
