did you eliminate shroud when installing elec fan ???
i am installing an electric fan in my car...
it is 16" and 2175 cfm...
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=10099
will i be ok without the cowling?
i am in doubt because of the backward angle of the radiator...
i am considering installing an aluminum plate across the front from the bottom of the radiator back to the frame crossmember that the a-frames bolt onto to deflect the air back up towards the engine to compensate for the tilt of the radiator...
what are your thoughts on this?
what have some of you done?

IF by cowling, you mean what we call s shroud...that large plastic piece in back of the rad the stock fan sort of fits in.....YES you need that piece...just reduce it's depth, and mount the fan in the normal centered position...not too close to the rad.....as you need airflow over the whole core, not just a section of the core....I use a stock '87 vette fan....16 inch....works fine....

The shroud directs the airflow through the fan, not around it, so having it will definitely make a difference.
Hey, what happened with the heads? Any details?

I am not using the factory fan shroud with my 16" electric fan. Never has a problem overheating. In fact, I can't crack 185 degrees even in the dead of summer in the South. Try the fan without the shroud. If you feel you are running to warm install the shroud.

One of the reasons I went to an electric fan setup was so I could get rid of that huge shroud! There was no way I could have installed by dual 11"s if I had left the shroud in place.

If you're mounting that fan TO the radiator, the shroud will do nothing for you. What the shroud does is increases the efficiency of the engine driven fan. Without a shroud, the fan is just moving air around under the hood. it isn't sucking from any particular place and it isn't blowing to any particular place.
The shroud makes it such that the fan is sucking ONLY from the radiator. Not over the top of the radiator, or underneath the car, or around the sides. Only through the radiator (that's what the rad seals do, too). If you put the fan up against the radiator, it's close enough that if it draws in air, it's coming from in front of and through the radiator. The shroud no longer does anything. Now if you mounted the new fan in the opening of the shroud where the engine-driven fan sits, then you'd need the shroud.

I through my shroud out. I wanted to get rid of that unsightly shroud. I did go to twin 16 inch electrics. I can't see how a electric fan mounted right up against the rad will benefit from a shroud. Someone else already stated how the shroud is needed with an engine fan but not an electric.

And after all this, I have an electric fan that's attached TO my shroud :D  It came out of a Grand AM and I rigged it to work as an auxillary fan up there. It isn't mouonted to the radiator at all.

This setup keeps my 406 at 190 degrees all day in 95 degree heat.Had to pull the engine since, and boy is it a snap with nothing in the way!
