Default 1979 Auxiliary Cooling Fan for Rad

I am looking for one of these. But apparently they are wired into the A/C circuit. I do not have A/C. I do have the temp sensor in the passenger side head. If I find one, can this stock fan be wired to work without A/C?

The fan is wired to work with both when the A/C is on and using the temp sensor when A/C is not on. So the answer is yes.

Thanks! I appreciate that. Will post in C3 Parts Area to see if I can find a good unit.

*Edit*-Do you know where the switched hot wire for the fan plugs into the wiring harness?

I have done a little more research on this. Seems I need a new fan shroud also....

After some thought....If the electric fan does not click on until 238F is reached, of what use is it? My car has never seen those temps. And for application was it designed given that temp threshold?

Years ago i just wired mine to a 50 amp toggle switch. That way I can leave it running in the pits when the motor is off or when the temp comes up to high around town driving.

I had looked into this as well and my part guy basically told me that it came on so hight that it was a failed design. Wasn't it only on this year?

Thanks! I was wondering if the 238F temp sensor could be swapped out for 200-210F for example. There must be a GM or aftermarket replacement. My t-stat is 195 so that would seem a reasonable choice.

Paul I think that the original Aux fan was meant to be used in case of being stalled in heavy traffic on a very hot day.

A situation such as this would have a very limited supply of air being provided only by the factory mechanical fan at low RPM. As the temp creeped up to an above safe temp this was to engage and supply an auxillary air flow to escape a severe overheating situation.

I agreee it wasn't to good of a system, and I think its original intention was only for the last resort. I have an'80 with A/C that did not come with one either. It seems that the L-82 cars are the only ones that recieved on in '80.

I had one I purchased at EXPO a couple of years ago and it seemed to provide a good supply of air to the radiator. It does not require a different Shroud. There should even be a spot ID'd on the shroud where each ot the three arms are to be located. Sorry but I already sold the one I had when I purchased the Z/28 duals recently.

If you will do a search here on the Forum you will find that many are using the Universal Thermostatic Control available from Summitt. This is also my plans. Maybe this helped,JIM

Jim,
I am beginning to think my latest project is just a waste of time. I did extensive tests of my cooling system last summer and posted the results here. With a GM 195 the engine was touching 220 on a hot (very rare here) day of 95F. I went with a Stant SuperStat 195 and things settled down to a max of 200F. And that is normal for my car. So I guess the electrical fan is not needed. If the price is right for the one I have located I may go with it just as an experiment. And I will check out that Summit product. Too much time on my hands this winter ;) .

I think you will be happy with it just knowing that you have a secondary system just in case. Someone more familiar may know but was this the only fan on the '82? Anyway it does put out a good amount of CFM, It is not weak.

I do believe that it would be beneficial in the traffic scenerio, and that it also could help as a supplemental system on just a warm day with the proper controls.

The Summitt kit is varible in its setting. I think it would be good to have this for a cool-off of the system after the engine is shut off. My Jeep does this and it prevents a cook off after the water pump and mechanical fan shuts off.

I would put one on my car if I hadn't went with the Dual Z/28's. JIM :seeya

I couldn't find the Summit temp sensor. I saw one for 170F but that is too cold.

The '82 has both an engine-driven fan and the auxillary electric fan. However, ours is only wired to go through the coolant switch in the head, not to come on with the A/C.

But at what temp is that sensor?

I believe it's high - like 238F, as previously mentioned in this thread. I'm going to see if I can find a lower temp unit also, as I'd like it to kick in around 205F or so.

Hey Paul, my '79 L82 has AC, and the fan comes on before 238°. My guage usually is a little below 200° when I notice the fan coming on. That is without AC or defroster running.

As far as I am concerned, the aux fan really doesn't do much good. I really don't think it moves that much air. If I had a car that didn't come with it originally, I wouldn't go through the trouble of installing one. You mentioned that you will need a new fan shroud. If you go with one of the usual vendors, like Eckler's, Rik's, MADVette, etc, you're going to spend at least $300 for the shroud itself. Plus, installation pretty much requires radiator removal and a lot of other work. I found that its best to remove the hood to get the radiator out, and I still beat up my radiator during the process.

Not trying to tell you your business, as it is your car, but I would spend less money on a heavier duty fan blade (if there is such an animal for our cars.)
