Heater Core - looking for removal tips
I have the interior gutted and thought this would be a perfect "while I'm at it" project (the core died last summer and I bypassed it). Looking for tips on the easiest way to get at it. Any help would be appreciated ...

I found Juliets site pretty helpful, check it out.

Re: Heater Core - looking for removal tips (30yr Wait)
I had already pulled my A/C out, so was able to remove the fan motor and the black box from the engine bay. I pulled the dash and removed the heater core and all the ducting from behind the dash. All in all I want to say it only took me around 3-4 hours to get it all out and then another couple putting the dash back on and blocking up the hole in the firewall.

If you've got the interior gutted...you're there! I did mine this past September and it was pretty straight forward...but test the core before installation.
The first one shipped to me was bad...leaked around the inlet and fortunately I caught it before installing.
Depending on age of car and mileage, you might consider doing a check of all your actuators and doors before puttiing things back together especially if you had cooling or heating problems. If interested let us know and I'll detail what I did.
Oh...I did this on a 78 A/C car.

Re: Heater Core - looking for removal tips (rafox77)
You need to leak test it AFTER you put it in the metal "cage" and fasten the retaining bracket. I found that putting this bracket back in place required bending the inlet slightly enough to cause a small leak at the solder joint.
This is easily fixed by grabbing a propane torch and some solder, just like home plumbing.

Good point and if these heater core replacements were produced correctly...then neither testing in the cage would not be necessary. These units are horrendous for their quality control and lack of fit.

The May 1999 issue of Corvette Fever had a good "how to" article on heater core replacement and heater box rebuilding. I can Xerox it and send it to you or maybe Corvette Fever's website has it.
