Default whats the easiest way to pull the engine on a C3?

just wondering what the easiest way to do it is? do you have to take the hood off? i have always taken the hood off and pulled it from the front, but i think i might be able to leave the hood on and pull it from the side? anyone anyone :chevy

I have done it from the side with and w/out the hood on and w/out the hood is easier but it can be done with the hood on. I was alone a few times so I had no choice but to do it with the hood on.

A tip: align the picker so when the engine breaks free of the trans the eng swings forward a few inches, that way you are not fighting the trans as much when you lift the eng up.

Will be pulling my eng tomorrow. :)

Hood off, remove with tranny still connected to engine. This is the easiest way I have found. Take a piece of plywood and temporally cover your radiator so it won’t accidentally get poked. If your cherry picker can reach from the front then do that. The cherry picker I used couldn't reach all the way in the engine bay from the front without first hitting the bumper so I pulled mine from the side without any problems.

I take the hood off then use a 20 dollar comealong attached to a steel beam in the garage ceiling then roll the car back :D

I have done it twice. Before you take the hood off; scratch around the hinges so you can put them back in the same position when you put it back on. It will save you a lot of time trying to re-align them. Next, remove the water pump, hoses, alternator, and power steering pump (leave the pump in the car so you won't have to disconnect the hoses). Remove the exhaust manifolds, pull the carb and distributor. If you have an auto trans, Disconnect the fly wheel and unbolt the housing. Drop the starter and unbolt the motor mounts. Disconnect the fuel lines from the pump and plug them off. Hook up the lift and carefully raise the motor out looking for things you might have missed. I have pulled it from the front without pulling the radiator.

Oh ya, You wanted to know the easiest way: PAY SOMEONE ELSE TO DO IT

:iagree:

After figuring in the PITA factor it was easier for me to pay someone else to do it. HOWEVER I really give props to you guys that do it all yourselves.

Neither me or my friends remove the hood. It's too easy to chip or scratch during R&R.

Just pull the rad. and hook it from the side.

Wow, I can't imagine pulling it w/out removing the hood. Anywho, I just pulled mine last week and the pics are up on my home page. Check it out in my sig in the 383 Install section.

I have probably done 10 motors in c-3's and I've never pulled the hood. It's just one less thing to screw with:)

I just tie everything back out of the way. I swing in the whole motor less carb, headers, fuel pump, and fan

Just put mine back in recently. I removed the hood because I'm working in a very small garage, and didn't have the room to work from the side. Hood is easy to R/R if you mark it first. I left the radiator in and just removed the shroud, and the fan. Took it out twice, and back in twice, with no other help. Be careful, if you have it on jack stands, that the front end does not rock.

From the side, hood on,trans still in the car. No trans fluid on the floor, and whole deal takes less than four hours by myself, start to bolted on the stand.
I must admit,I've had practice. :mad :smash:

I have yanked the engine so many times I can do it in my sleep. partly due to my stupidity(ie bought wrong flex plate, installed it holes did not line up, engine mounts from zip products didnt line up correctly, dealer bought mounts went right in place with no problem, small car garage) Making a long story short removed hood and pulled engine from the side.

I took my hood off first then pulled the engine, trany, headers and everything. Then I decided to pull the body off and do it right.

If I can do it by myself anyone here can. I took the hood off and pulled it from the side, took as much as possible off first. This was my first time.

Here's the install pics don't have pics of pulling it, lost them when the hard drive died.

from the right side, remove the hood, and I put the the right side on a jack stand and removed the wheel/tire. That way I only had to steer the hoist around the stand and not the entire wheel.
