Carpet/Seatbelts question
Hello All, I'm working on the carpet installation on my 73 project car. I bought this car in pieces so it is quite an adventure. Do the black plastic seat belt covers go under the carpet or does the carpet go down first and the covers on top. Thanks for any help. Craig

Re: Carpet/Seatbelts question (CF6873)
Hey CF6873,
The black covers that go over the lap belt seat belt go under the carpet...installed with 4 screws...two into the bottom and two into the side...then install carpet and then seat etc... CF did you have any rust problems underneath your compartments???

Re: Carpet/Seatbelts question (Gotta Fix my '76)
This car had all kinds of rust problems including the seatbelts. I got new ones from snake=oyl and now its time for them to be bolted in. Thanks for the info. Craig

Re: Carpet/Seatbelts question (CF6873)
My 33000 mile 72 has the seat belt retract mechanism bolted to the bare floor. Then the plastic cover is screwed to the floor through the carpet. Yhere is a cutout in the carpet that is about 1" smaller than the plastic cover.
If you are installing new carpet, lay it out on the floor and run a sharp object, like an ice pick, up from the underneith the car through the 6 (?) original screw holes. That will help you locate the holes. Then lightly screw the cover into the holes. Mark the outline of the cover and then remove the cover. With the cover off you can now move your outline 1" closer. This way, when you put the seat belt retract mechanism in and the plastic cover on, you will have the seat belt bolted to bare fiberglass and the cover bolted through the carept into the fiberglass.

Re: Carpet/Seatbelts question (GaryS)
Gary, Thanks for the reply. Can I assume that your 72 has original carpet and that it is the way it came from the factory with the plastic cover on top of the carpet with a cutout? Craig

CF,
My 72 was like GaryS. No carpet went over the seat belt mechanism under the seat. I had original carpet, or what was left when I got it in 84

By all indications, this carpet is original and appears to never have been removed or modified. My description of the carpet is consistent with what the folks over at the NCRS are saying. Yes, the plastic cover does sit on top of the carpet with a cutout for the actual mechanism.
