Default C3 power steering pump

How hard is it to replace a power steering pump?

The pump on my sister's 82 C3 went out and she has no power steering.

I don't have the parts, so part #s and places to look for them would be helpful as well.

Its easy to remove the PS pump, just remove the belt and drain the PS fluid out of it.Then just unbolt it from the engine.

If I remember correctly, there are two bolts holding the pump in place. You can probably get a rebuilt pump from your local auto parts store, or you can get a new pump. Not sure if the local generic parts store will have a new pump. Also check your local Chevy dealer.

I agree with "The Money Pit" about the pressed on pulley. I recently swapped the PS Pump on my '79 and ended up having my neighbor who is a mechanic bring home his "power steering pulley" tool kit. It requires the special pulley puller and then you have to press it back on with the same tool. I bought my pump at Advance Auto Parts, so, I'm guessing all the major auto parts places will have the pump. If you can get it at AutoZone they probably have the tool you can borrow to do this job.

You can't do it without the special tool as the metal is very thin and will easily be bent/ruined.

You can get the guts of the pump and rebuild it yourself, but the pulley is pressed on and requires special pullers to remove. I ordered an older style innard which has the nut that retains the pulley, and added the billet pulley, since I :smash: :smash: :smash: trashed the original trying to remove it.

Make sure that the pump is bad, as there are two more components in the Corvette P/S system. The control valve and the actuator.. A bad control valve can bypass fluid and imitate a bad pump.

I had the pump replaced on my 82 for about $170, parts and labor. About $85 parts. Good enought for me.

And here's a tip: Do not use the reservoir for leverage when tightening the P/S belt. You will damage it to the point of causing a leak.
