HELP!! Do I have a '77 early or late??
Folks,
I am having a panic attack. I finally bucked up and bought a new wiring harness for my '77. Based on the fact that I did NOT have an alarm key in the fender and I saw the wires going into the door I decided I have a '77 late. I went ahead and ordered that harness. It arrived and looked beautifull. I installed it onto the firewall w/ no problem but when I try and hook up the engine side they don't match up.
Before I call Ecklers (harness manufacture is M&H) and discuss I wanted to check w/ the real experts.
My VIN is as follows: 1Z37X7S442528
Thanks as always!!
Tim M.

Your VIN is certainly late. And the alarm is in the door rather than the fender. It might be worth calling these wiring experts before getting back to the vendor. They are specialists.

I don't know where you get official "early/late" model dates or production numbers from, but FWIW,
Car number 27,373 was the first to have the alarm switch integrated with the door lock. That sounds early in production, but it was actually the third (and final) front fender style change.
Also, you're car is number 42,528 out of 49,213. That sounds pretty late to me, but like I said I don't know for sure.
Hopefully someone else has something more definite.

Well, y'all are at least making me feel like I am not crazy. I am going to call M&H (the actual manufacturer of the harness) and see where I get. I can take a picture of the harness (w/ me new digital camera) and see if it matches up w/ what they expect.
Thanks for the info.

Well I can relax now. I talked to M&H. The answer is that I just need to cut (I am a little nervous about this) the key on the new wiring harness fuse block. I guess the mold changed and to use it w/ my engine harness there is a key in the upper right hand side that needs to be trimmed.
The guy on the phone knew about it as soon as I said that it didn't fit in that corner. His explanation was that most of the time people replace both harnesses and they fit fine. :)
So tonight back to work!!

for some reason I thought the alarm switch to door had occurred much earlier...27xxx is past production mid point.
27,000+ is a pretty late change in production. I can't recall what they would have been, but I thought some changes were even later (e.g., when did the coolant overflow tank change design?). It'd really be interesting to find documentation on all of the little changes throughout the year.
BTW, I should have quoted my source; I like to do that so people can get an idea of the value/utility of a book, so...
From "The Corvette Black Book" by Mike Antonick : "Effective with #1Z37X7S427373, the alarm activator was moved from the driver-side fender to the driver-side door lock."
