Rounded a lug nut completely, any suggestions?
On my winter beater, I turned on lug nut into a smooth round problem.
ANY suggestions would be very appreciated.

Do you have enogh space to slam a smaller socket on to the rounded nut?
Can you heat the nut with a torch and grab it with a vicegrip?
Can you get a chisel on to it and split it?
:smash: :smash:

Try a metric size just under the US size and pound it on with a hammer. This worked for me..

If you run out of options... Sears (and probably other places) sells nut/bolt removers which have a sharp reverse twist grip internal blade(s)... they worked on a rounded 5.0 Mustang starter bolt for me recently. Got me out of a serious jam. They sell for $20/set, and there are two sets. On sale they're half price. But... if there is a stud sticking up out of the nut, these might not reach the nut. I would try the visegrips first. Lock 'em on as tight as possible, and twist them with a screw driver.

Had a similar problem once.....used vice grips....and an aluminum section of a patio umbrella pipe that fit over the grips to give lots of leverage. One good crack and the nut cam undone. This was on a '67 Galaxie that I owned a long time back.

I agree with slickman..... get the size smaller socket and beat the living crap out of it until its on the nut. It worked on my wheel locks that were on the parts vette..... took me 10 minutes for all 4.
Let me guess this is probably a lug nut with a sheet steel out nut that is chromed to look all pretty??? the steel behind it probably rusted and bulged the nut and you then rounded it? I've done that a few times.....I never use those type of lugnuts anymore.

I had to get a locking lug off my vette when I bought it. I took it to a welding shop, and the guy just welded a new lug on and took it off. Cost me 20.00 and ten minutes. :seeya

sell the car :D
Seriously, I think the options are pretty will covered. Welding or vice-grips would be my preferences.

If you go the socket route, suggest you get a 12 point, rather than 6, to beat on the nut. A '12' has more sharp edges and is more likely to work in this instance in my opinion.

Sears also sells a "nut splitter" . I used it a couple times on lug nuts. It has a hardened blade with cuts thru the bolt as you tighten. This one is about 5 inches long and somewhat offset to keep the tightening bolt at an angle. It amazed me that is cut right thru the bolt. :smash: :smash:
If your beater is an old GM---there may be a decorative chrome cap atop the actual lugnut. If just the out cap is stripped you can pop that cap to get to the lug.

OK, tried the smaller size trick and it was a no go. I think the damn lug is pretty well stuck. I will try to find the Sears piece at the local Canadian Tire tonight. I know the welding route but I want to do it myself in my garage.
BTW, it is not a lug with chrome cover. It is the damn steel lug. It is so stuck, the BS socket that comes with the jack now has no teeth. When I pulled out the good stuff, I ruined the lug.
BTW, love this forum!

If you can't get the nut splitter, use a grinder and create two opposing side flats to put an open end wrench on.

My daughter lost the key to her locking wheel lugs. I used a new chisel and had the locking lug nut off in about 20 minutes. Also got a good workout.

Its a jeep alum wheel and the lugs are in a cylindrical tunnel opening. I can't get anything but the socket in there.

I was going to say just dremel the nut off & replace the lug if you mess it up, but I guess you can't get to it with a dremel due to the wheels. I wonder if you could drill the lug out? That would probably be a horrendous pain, & might cause you even more problems. Let us know what works!
Maybe you could lay a drill press on the floor, & clamp it to the wheel. Then just drill it out. :D

That'll teach you for owning a Jeep :yesnod:
I'd try those sockets from Sears... I haven't seen them at CTC yet(I window shop a lot) but you never know.
Have fun!

I would try splitting the nut by drilling 2 holes through it. parallel to the stud and on opposite sides from each other. Drill the holes big enough so the nut will split easily with a small chisel at each hole. If that won't do it, you could drill out the stud. :smash: :smash:
