Anyone upgrade their stock mechanical fuel pump
Thinking of upgrading my stock fuel pump and was wondering what mechanical fuel pump would be good to use ( 80GPH, 110GPH, 130GPH ?). Kind of favouring Holley right now but am open to suggestions.

Re: Anyone upgrade their stock mechanical fuel pump (MotorHead)
Send Brutus an email, he bought a Holley chrome/polished mechanical pump when he was here last, but I don't remember if he liked it or not. If you are looking for electric I have a Holley Blue, but they're noisy even with my sidepipes....just adds to the cool factor for me though :D

I have the Holley 110GPH. Works fine, no bad noises like the electrics. Does need a regulator, though, as its output shutoff is at 7.5PSI. With your nitrous setup, I think I'd upgrade too. It's certainly overkill for my normally aspirated 327, though.

What do you guys do for with the return line? The pump I bought only has an input and output prt, no return port.

Funny thing is now I am going to fuel injection and will now need to use that line !

I have the Holley Black series pump in my car now, 140gph / 14 psi
If you are running a big shot of nitrous, i would suggest seperate fuel systems. I use this pump and still have problems with satifying the fuel shut off switch when using the nitrous. It drives me nuts!

Re: Anyone upgrade their stock mechanical fuel pump (74VETTE)
I am looking at two Holley pumps right now, the first is 110GPH ( 6.5-8psi ) that does not require a pressure regulator and the second is 130GPH ( 7.5-9psi) that does require the extra pressure regulator.
I would like to use the first one 110GPH. I will not be running any more than 150 shot of nitrous and right now it is set to 100, is this pump good enough ?

I'm running the Holley 110gph pump. I'd also like to know if this is enough for a 150 shot of nitrous, as I will be running it eventually.

Re: Anyone upgrade their stock mechanical fuel pump (Ryan77)
After finding my fuel pressure barely above 2lbs thru the 1/4 mile, I ended up running 2 complete fuel lines from the tank. The carb got the line with a mechanical pump and the nitrous got the line with the Holley electric with regulator. No problem anymore with pressure.

Re: Anyone upgrade their stock mechanical fuel pump (Ryan77)
MotorHead and Ryan77, considering I have the Holley Black pump. 140 gph and 14 psi, and i have some issue with the fuel pressure switch shutting the nitrous off sometimes, i dont think those pumps would be good enough.
I couldnt remember, but i think i might have had a low tank of gas which could cavitate the pump and loss of pressure. But i just do not remember, so I have to go out and try it sometime with a half tank or more, but have a lot of stuff to install before I can go back out.
If i had the money to do it, id run a dedicated fuel system for each the carb and nitrous. Someday! What im gonna do is use the stock fuel lines and my holley black pump for the nitrous only and then run 1 new fuel line to a high output mechanical pump for the carb only. Problem is getting another pick up in the tank.
If anyone else has some engenious ideas, im open to suggestions.

Re: Anyone upgrade their stock mechanical fuel pump (74VETTE)
Motorhead, with only a 100 hp shot of NOS, you do not need anything more than the 110gph pump, above that you will require more. I have a brand new 110 gph Holley pump in my garage right now sitting next to my new 406 because I can't decide if I want to go to electric or not. I hear the Holleys are way to loud, so I am looking into the Mallory 4142 pump & Mallory 4309 5-port regulator with bypass return port. This is expensive though >$300 CAD!

The Mallory is a different design than the Holley, and is supposed to be much more quiet, but I haven't been able to determine that for certain yet.

I went with the Holley 110gph mechanical pump also. Only thing is I needed to change the outlet postions on the pump to get it to work with my car. The return line I just plugged it. So far no problems.
I don`t have nitrous either, so I can`t add anything here.

I must also warn you of one problem I had with my first black pump was the bottom gasket gave out while i was at the track. not cool! no problems since Summit replaced it for free

Re: Anyone upgrade their stock mechanical fuel pump (MotorHead)
Stock pumps can handle 550-600 HP and you don`t need an ugly regulator hanging in the engine bay. Any thing over 7 lbs. will blow the needle and seat in a carb. L88`s and LS7`s work just fine with the stock pumps and so does my injection.

Re: Anyone upgrade their stock mechanical fuel pump (71roadster)
Obviously you can cap the return line, but that leads to an increased probability of vapor lock.
Option 2 is to get a regulator with a port for a return line. That's what I did (got it from Summit) - works fine.

Re: Anyone upgrade their stock mechanical fuel pump (Eddie 96)
Eddie - I have the Holley 110 pump on my 383 which I recently got running. I am using the original, rebuilt Qjet. I seem to be having carb problems and I think the output pressure is too high for the Qjet. What carb are you using? Do you use a regulator? Thanks.
