The 1000hp Pontiac Sunfire 2.2L EcoTec Engine
I thought this article in the local newspaper today would be of interest. I work with these peppy little engines everyday but...Wow! It seems that GM engineering is now being directed to the ricer crowd. But I do give GM credit for trying. Imagine being shutdown by a Sunfire/Cavalier??

That's the same 2.2 Eco Tec they put in Opel's around here. Not with those output figures, but still. There's lot of potential in smaller engines too, clad to see that GM has realized that. :)

When I went to the Super Chevy Show this year, they had a yellow caviler there running 8-9 sec. 1/4's with a 800+ hp 2.2 ecotec. They said it was straight for GM that way. I guess GM is proving that it can be done. I'd take one for a daily driver :yesnod:
[EDIT]
I searched on the super chevy show website to see if I could find any info, but couldn't. I did find a half-cut picture  You might be able to tell that it had a custom paint job. It was yellow with lots of little orange chevy bowties painted on it, giving it a cool fading look.

Kudos to GM, this is great news. But what would we call "ricers" if they drove American cars? Hot doggers? :D

Domestics can make fast 4 bangers, not just imports, even though it's not the amount of cylinders, rather the displacement that really gives the advantage.
You may find this link interesting (click on the name Nelson Hoyos at the bottom for the cars): http://www.gm.com/automotive/gmpower...ents/index.htm
I was lucky enough to have my car on display this summer at the GM Tech Rally where I had the pleasure of meeting the man who is GM's engineer on these projects and he showed me the motor and software. The motors were surprisingly stock, basically de-stroked to 2.0 L to get the rpm up to 10,000.
The Cavalier runs 8.51 @ 175 mph
The Sunfire has run recently a 9.8 @ 144 mph
Impressive!

Yes it is. We see that European input in the Opel 3.0L seen in the Cadillac Catera and the Saturn L-Series as well. GM has truly gone global.
BTW, that EcoTec engine is now standard in the Chevrolet Cavalier and Pontiac Sunfire for 2003. The old 2.2L pushrod engine is now history. Sort of sorry to see them go. Aside from valve cover gasket leaks those little engines would go 250,000km without a re-build. They were very dependable.

Re: The 1000hp Pontiac Sunfire 2.2L EcoTec Engine (TurboVette)
I remember reading in a CHP editorial that Lingenfelter tuned one of these engines, added a turbo larger than the engine, and it's making more than 1000 hp (and he believes it's capable of reaching more than 1200 hp!). If I remember correctly, the engine is in a pickup truck, that runs in the low 7's!

One little 2.2L + one T4 Turbo = 1000hp :troll That makes me look pretty silly for building a Twin Turbo V8 and setting my goal for 600bhp :skep:
Man Turbos are  I mean Hot!

Pedro,
I will now give up on the 350 crate engine for obvious reasons. Does an EcoTec fit in a Corvette ;) ?

Paul,
You have room for two of them... :D Would that mean you'd have a non-cylinder-challenged 2000 hp Corvette? :jester
What does EcoTec mean? Is that some sort of politically correct tree-hugging name? :troll

Top Fuel and Funny Car 6000 HP V8, I rest my case we win again
Hopefully these automakers will start making more of these performance cars real wheel drive, like the 350Z :D

Re: The 1000hp Pontiac Sunfire 2.2L EcoTec Engine (paul79)
Nice article. I think the EcoTec is what they named the L850 engine. If that is true, I've seen the crankshaft and cams (the company I worked for produces polishing machines for cranks/cams/piston pins/etc) The nodular iron crank I dealt w/ was nice in that it had very little casting flash compared to others and the counterweights were already "bladed". I've also seen steel versions over in Europe. The combination of forced induction and high RPM's is quite potent... So I guess I'm lowering my MPG just to get the deep rumble rather than the whine... :skep:

Larry82 - Yeah! and couple that 1200HP to a CF dual friction clutch (whoa!!!)
a street trans, a stock rearend and IRS and wow! If I only could have
'designed' such a combo.... I'm betting it won't make 60 feet before one
or all of those things disintegrates...

Small world Paul. The Tech Rally was a great show. Mine was the only Vette that wasn't a C 5 there, but the Turbo V6 made many look twice :D. The Ecotec was using the same size turbo and similar management system to my car.

Re: The 1000hp Pontiac Sunfire 2.2L EcoTec Engine (paul79)
Did you know the record for developing the highest specific power output of any engine in history was set by a 121ci - 4 cylinder?
1270Hp to be exact, a version of the Olds Quad 4 engine years ago. And if memory serves correct it was naturally aspirated. A version of it also reached 267.339 with AJ Foyt at the wheel (international record).
Better yet does anyone know who developed the engine and holds this record?
Glad to see GM carrying the torch.
I'm more impressed with the percentage of improvement/efficiency you can get out of an engine - ANY engine regardless of size.

Re: The 1000hp Pontiac Sunfire 2.2L EcoTec Engine (Injected)
that is so intresting, Then again, how reliable would they come out to be? pushing 800 hp out of a 2.2, no doubt there is some engineering lardmarks that had to have been crossed. But how exactly is is capiable of seeing so much. Is it the Hemi sytle head design, or the 180 degree rod seperation"I think thats how they are, is a straight crank design more effiecent and stable than a V block style crank? what if you brought back a straight 8 and applied the same ideas?
