Do I have a 350?
Hey guys, I was looking at my Chilton's the other day and realized Chevy put a 305 in 1980, in Cali. cars. It got me wondering. I was alway told, the easiest way to spot a 305 was that the block was blue and had an aluminum intake. My '81 has a blue block and aluminum intake. It a St. Louis made car and the VIN is an '81 on my pillar. I have yet to get my numbers off of the engine itself. I don't see any evidence at all that a swap was made. What do you fellas think?

If it feels like you are pulling an extra car then you probably have a 305. :)
Do as GS states and cross reference the block numbers.

Don't worry, you have a 350, all '81s are 350s, so you can tell all your friends, that you've got a big one!!!!!!!!!! By the way, color has nothing to do with size of the engine...........all '81s were painted GM 'corporate blue'.
So now that you know the truth..........you have a Merry Christmas!!

Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I think the only 305's in Vettes were in 1980 Vettes, not 81. Also, all late C3 blocks were blue.

Olivier, thanks for the info. I will continue to look for those numbers. The ones that I did find, don't seem like they go with anything. By my oil filter I found a type of extruded number either an I or 1 89 207 N. Doesn't seem familiar. Should my intake be aluminum also? Thank you

I think GM switched from orange to blue during the 77 model year. I believe early 77's were orange and late 77's were blue. Mine is blue

Stock intake in '81 was / is aluminum. All '81's had 350s, called / labled by GM as an "L81" engine, which is really a computer controled distributor and carburator, otherwise L48 engine with aluminum intake and magnesium valve covers, with tube type exhaust manifolds and engine block and heads painted GM Corporate Blue.

also if you look at the sticker mounted on the firewall directly above your power brake booster. This Sticker Labeled "Vehicle Emissions Control Information" has in its upper Left corner a small box - in that small box you will find a 2-3 letter code and below that in incredibly tiny text the engine size.
For example on my 78 is has the 2 letter code DW (or something like that) and below that it says 350 cu. in
Also in bog bold letters on the sticker it says CATALYST this tells the smog ***** that the car came from the manufacturer with a Catalytic convertor.
This is a lot easier than casting code research - but nearly as much fun :yesnod:
