What's The Best Value in Exhaust Manifold Gasket (Hedman Hedders)
Please advise regarding the best value in exhaust gaskets for my SBC with Hedman headers. I used the paper style but when I pulled the headers, the gaskets literally broke apart. I have installed copper at the 3" collectors. Should I go with copper for the exhaust gaskets?
I used 'stock' sized port exhaust manifolds that came with the headers. If copper, which Jegs or Summit P/N should I order?
OK. Got the prices and P/N's (Mr Gasket):
Summit - MRG-7151 = $34.95 + 7.95 Handling ('Free' Shipping)
Jegs - 720-7151 = $36.99 + 7.99 S&H

I personally used Percy's.......I would not go for value on such a part rather durablility , longevity and most of all LEAK FREE

Which is correct for a stock Chevy with Hedman headers; square or round port? Does it matter?

I've always had good luck with Fel-Pro blue steel. You buy the gasket that fits the head port. They also come as D port shape which I use.

The best gasket is no gasket. High temp silicone. No compression of the gasket to loosen fastners. No weak spot in gasket to blow. Try it, you won't use gaskets again.

Ed I might be all wrong! But I'm thinking that you really need some gasket. For expansion and contraction. Even a slight heat barrier. I use Fel-Pro blue steel also with a thin coat of Permatex red on the motor side. So I can pull the headers and the gasket stays in place. Id say mine are over 5 years old.

Percys with stage 8 locking header bolts. There is no better combination for longevity and reliability. Once you put the stage 8 bolts on there your original torqued bolts will be retained and the percy's gaskets will not leak.

I can not take credit for this idea. I only know that a very old friend of mine who has been building race engines since the 50's and who has taught me most of what I know about motors, told me this trick. I have been using headers for years with no gaskets and no leaks. All I can tell you is that this technique works. If I did not try it and have good success, I would not recommend it to anyone.

Re: What's The Best Value in Exhaust Manifold Gasket (Marks69BB)
I just installed the Percys with Stage 8 bolts on one side tonight. We'll see... I have D port heads and round Hedman (only thing I could find with all the emissions stuff I needed). I initially ordered the square port gaskets and had to get the round port instead. The Hedmans are not ground flush with the flange (yeah, I know...) and it didn't look like the square port gaskets would have sealed them. Mark, I hope you had just as much fun as I didn't getting the Stage 8's installed. Maybe those BB headers have more room? Is there ANYTHING easy to do on these cars? :smash:

so, no gaskets between the motor and the headers or between the collector and the pipe?
