I've chasing an annoying rattle for the last couple of days, well this evening I found it. The top bolt of my left rear shock was horribly loose. The rattling was the washer on the backing nut.
After I found that I started checking other nuts and bolts on the back of the car. I also found a couple of bolts loose on the spring mount into the rearend cover.
Last year I dropped the rearend and refurbed the rear of the car and associated parts. When I put it all back together I torqued everything to spec. I haven't driven the car that much since then, probably less that 500 miles, because I started the ZZ4 engine swap and tranny rework almost immediately.
I guess a key learning from this is to go back and check your work, after you've driven for a while. While loosing the top bolt in a shock might not be catastrophic, an unevenly torque spring mount could cause some real problems, the least of which is a cracked rearend cover.
