Default Suggestions for an alternator bracket?

I want to replace the factory alternator bracket with something that looks better. Does anyone have any suggestions for a bracket? I have headers.

Below is one of March's alternator brackets that looks nice and has a clever tensioning arm (like a tie rod). Does anyone have one of these?

I bought one that is very similar to the March but a little cheaper. I haven't installed it yet but it looks really good and solid. I think I paid something like $130. I'll look tonight and tell you who it was from. You can also buy just the tensioning bar if that's what you're really interested in.
I also lucked out, I ordered the natural finish which is cheaper than the polished finish. Well, they must have been out of the natural because I got all polished pieces. :D

There is a cast aluminum version of the factory mount, I have one and am going to use it when I install my headers. It is a smooth dull aluminum finish, but I might try buffing it with some aluminum polishing compound to see if it improves the appearance of it. If that doesn't work, I might try ceramicoating it silver.
I haven't tried coating aluminum, but I guess it should work.

I would like to get their lower bracket.. I can't use the kit because the upper adjustable rod mounts on the intake.. I don't have a mounting hole on my intake...

fwayne,

I purchased the March bracket you pictured. The quality is very good.

One thing to consider though is potential interference with the power steering pump. I have the engine (SBC) out of the car and the PSP cap cannot be removed from pump as it is right under the bracket.

I am planning to use a slightly longer drive belt, which will allow the pump to angle back in the bracket a little more.

A while back some one posted a photo of a PSP that had a remote tank. Very  , and useful as well. A remote tank would be a very nice solution to the PITA location of the stock fill location. I believe the power steering pump was aftermarket, but I don't know the manufacturer.

I ended up just making my own out of some aluminum.

I ordered mine from Zoops. You need to be careful that the bracket isn't to tall and hits the underside of the hood.

I have something similar to what 70 LS1 has.
Not my engine, I have the same bracket (& pulleys)

Even with what I assume is the factory bracket, I can barely get the cap off of the power steering reservoir.

I don't know if you know what the part number is of the kit you have, but do you have any idea what the difference is between 20131 and 20132? They have the same descriptions (at http://www.marchperf.com/pg8.html#ombrac).

The aluminum alternator mount looks exactly like the cast iron mount found on 1975-82 vettes. It is just a dull smooth cast aluminum color. I think it will polish up nicely, but if it doesn't I'll Cerama-coat it, to match my headers and valve covers.

Zip products has them through the restoration store for $59.00, if you use the Corvette Forum discount of %5 it is a little cheaper.

Zoops is another outfit that sells custom mounts for alternators, I think they are cheaper than March Products.

The last one I did on another car was a spacer tube bought from the "Help" section at Pep Boys, a long bolt, a few washers. That mounts the lower mounting tab to the front of the cylinder head. For the top mount you can either use a sleeve with rod ends like the March unit's or the good old fashioned universal upper mount. The one that looks like a small cane with a slot in the end for the belt tension adjustment.

fwayne,

The bracket I purchased is March - 20130. I can't find a reference to that part number on the March site except for a comment on their powersteering pump bracket that says it won't work with Alt bracket 20130.

My bracket is not powder coated. The web site indicates their "new" brackets are powder coated. The 20130 number is probably obsolete and replaced by 20131 or 20132.

My guess is that one of the part numbers is for a DRIVER'S side alternator bracket and the other is for a PASSENGER'S side bracket.

The placement of the PSP cap is  , I was hoping someone would post a comment on the pump with the remote fill tank.

Hi Wayne! Just take a look of that picture again ... Does it look like the alternator is hanging at end of crane or more like aeroplane wing :smash:

Save your bucks and built it like 70 LS1 or Twinnie .Your belts will be shorter and looks 10 times better. Check how i did with my big block.with short pump and right side of the engine. Ok it took more than just few pieces of aluminium but it was tight ,close and rock solid. Sometimes its better to sit down and think a minute than spend a second on catalog stuff.

I have seen the remote mounted tank for the power steering pump (as a matter of fact I happen to have one on an old chevy pickup I bought for parts  ). I always thought that the only time you would use one of these would be when you installed the hydro booster that was a big thing in the 80's. That's the only time I've seen one used.

I agree. I think I'm going to wait a lot more than a minute before I decide what to do. I just installed new valve covers and I need to move my alternator a bit, but I just can't seem to find a belt that fits without having to take the alternator off the bracket. I thought that while I'm at it, I could replace the ugly old bracket - it doesn't look right on the new motor. I'll live with it until I figure out what to do.

Thanks, everyone, for all the advice.
