Hey, I have a luggage rack on my 76 anybody know if this is orginal or not?The reason I ask is I've seen them without in old ads and such The corvette black book doesnt mention them as a option until 77 and the black book is what I swear bye.It doesnt really matter anyways because I like it on there.Gonna pull it off soon and have it rechromed and mount it right for some reason the wood skrews on there now don't apeal to me.I kind of like the cobra gas caps some people put on (Is cobra a dirty word here?)I wonder If that would fit with a rack on?Thanks,Dale :thumbs:

My understanding is that the luggage rack first appeared as an option on the 77 though I have seen them on earlier cars as well.

I wouldn't rechrome it. For about $200 you can get a stainless steel one that comes with the proper hardware to install it. This will last much longer than the rechromed and I understood the cost to be about the same.

I think the racks were dealer installed prior to 77.

Rechrome may be the way to go if looks are important and of course they are. I have a friend that has the Stainless Steel on his 69 and it has a REAL DULL finish compared to his chrome bumpers, just doesn't look right, he has tried every polish he can find and nothing seems to work. He would really like to change it but is afraid that the mounting holes won't match up.

You must measure the hole distances.
I bought a new rack when I had my '69 painted and it didn't fit.
Dealer installed racks at least on a '69 have different hole spacing.I sent the rack back and had to get my original rechromed which cost about $100 more than a new rack.

Shelby originally wanted a Chevy engine for the Cobra.

See if your rack mounts w/ 8 screws or has the pins for the T-Top holders (77).

ok this is what ncrs says late 1976 approx march the factory installed racks
this is first time they did other were dearer or owners installed
factory ones where the same as 1977 with the pins to hold the t tops
they did not come with thr holders
