Default OK a retarded question from a youngen

In my passenger compartment there it is labeled 9.0:1 compression ratio with 285 ft/lbs of torque.

Can I bolt on a set of vortec heads and have ir run well.

Guru_4_hire,

Check out the link below for the result of various mods to a (new) low HP GM Goodwrench 350. Some of the mods include vortec heads. Depending on the mileage/condition of your engine (rings, etc), you might have to upgrade or repair some other engine components.

i would have my car put on a Dyno, and throughly tuned first. Based on the graph and tuning process you may be able to see if heads would help. usually heads are a good way to gain power. especially if you shave the heads. it raises compression making a more potent burst in the cylinder. (i know theres a better way to word that...)

I think CHP SuperChevy and basically all of the other mags are :bs when doing performance upgrades. even if your car is stock, it is the only one that runs the way it does. heads hurt some cars, and help others. CHP cant get specific to your car, so they cant really help you.

long post short, get it tuned, then see if heads will help. :yesnod:

Well right now I have no servicable heads -- and I am trying to get it running well on a tight budget.

The heads will do you well. Not only will they raise compression, but they'll also flow much better than smogger or stock LM-1 heads. Go for it. Add a cam with it and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

will my stock 9.0 compression cause issues or am I gonna have to come up with some dished pistons on the cheap too?

someone told me to retard timing on the ignition and a high compression wont get to cranky with me

9:1 compression is no big deal. You can run that on the street without any problems. The Vortec heads are great, they flow really well. What cam are you going to run? Just to be sure, do you know that you need an intake manifold that has the Vortec bolt pattern? It's no big deal, Edelbrock makes one but if you don't have it, that would be a surprise. Also, the Vortec heads need self guiding rockers not standard rockers. This isn't a biggie either, just so you know.

Or you can get a set of aluminum heads and run 10:1 compression on pump gas with no problem. Maybe you'd want to get some forged flat-tops, too. While you're in there, you might as well stroke it to a 383 and use all forged internals. Headers, true dual exhaust, Holley 850 carb, a serious ignition system... and also, why not? Slap on a blower.

Er... Vortec heads and a cam switch should be killer. It will be nice not to be in debt a million dollars, too! :D

You might need to retard the timing a little bit with 10:1 compression, but I'm not sure. Run good gas, though. :yesnod:

If you're in a real dollar pinch, you can use a 015 gasket to bump the compression up and do some home porting to get better flow.
