Would You Buy This New GM 350 Engine for $900US?
Just thinking;) . It is adequate for my type of driving. This gets back to the originality post and storing my L-82 in the corner of a garage for future owners who want the numbers.

And I have a "remanufactured" Al intake...

Re: Would You Buy This New GM 350 Engine for $900US? (paul79)
Paul, the specs listed are L48 specs:
Horsepower: 249 HP @ 5,000 RPM RPM
Torque: 304 Ft/Lbs @ 3,500 RPM
Compression Ratio: 8.50 to 1
Block: 4 – Bolt, 2 Piece Rear Seal, 4.000” Bore
Crankshaft: Cast Nodular 3.480” Stroke
Heads: Cast Iron, 72cc
Valves (I/E): 1.940” / 1.600”
Camshaft, Lift (I/E): 0.390” / 0.410” Hydraulic
Dur. @ 0.050" (I/E): 195° / 202°
Intake: Not Included
BUT, for $900 + $500 in mods it is definately worth it for what you need it for. :yesnod:

Flav,
You know I know that :) . But the L-48 equivalent is just fine with me. For about 1,500 miles of city and highway cruising a year that looks like a nice engine. And with a warranty. I could pop on the Al intake shown above (although I have been advised not to use it), or use the intake that is on the car at the moment, and I have new/old L-82 covers coming from Ed T., and my waterpump is new, etc. Must be cabin fever but that thread on originality got me thinking. Its "just" a 1979 but an L-82 engine with 46,000 miles (untouched) may be worth something in 10 years. I would like to preserve it.

On the other engine, there is a 1 yr/20,000km warranty but it is not GM and it is remanufactured rather than new. Still, it is a good deal IMHO.

Flav,
I can't find those L79 specs. Do you have them? That was the old 350hp version if I remember correctly.

Thanks for letting me but in

That is for the hot-air choke tubing.
You can see it somewhat rusted in this pic.
Well you can't. For some reason the Forum will not let me bring up new pics. But here is an old one of the hot air choke pipes.

That sure sounds like the same engine that is sold down here for about $1300 dollars. Perhaps the fact that it is assembled in Mexico has something to do with your advantage in the exchange rate. Zillions (ok, maybe an exaggeration) of those engines are in use in everthing from trucks to Corvettes and I've haven't heard many complaints. It doesn't sound to me like you're looking for max performance so I think you (and your wallet) would be happy with one. I would suggest that you upgrade the cam though. Like already posted, it's basically an L48 and the cam that it comes with is better suited to a 3/4 ton truck than to a Corvette. Making the cam change before the engine is installed would be way easier than it would be with the engine in the car and the cost to power increase ratio would be very good.
Keep in mind that it's 249 hp rating is gross and that it is without emission controls so don't expect it to out perform a stock L82 in comparable dress with it's stock cam. Chevy High Performance magazine did a build up of the this engine awhile back and had very good results considering it's low cost.

Paul, It looks like the old "Target Master" engine that GM has been selling for years. I think Pacin' California has one in his car and is not at all happy with the power it puts out. It is also the same short-block that is used by GM for their 350/330 hp Vortec headed crate engine.
This is a good motor for an older pickup, or a family sedan but I think it would be a little puny for a 'vette without some performance additions.
$900.00 US for the complete engine is a good price, if you need an engine like that and want to depend on the warranty. I think I'd find a good four bolt short block (post 88 with roller rocker provisions) put on some performance heads (even cast iron Vortecs) and a Comp XR272, and make 350+ hp and 400+ lbft of torque. It would probably end up costing you 3X the cost of that GM crate engine, but it would boil the tires of a C-3, where that GM crate would probably barely bark the tires.

Also very good is the L46/L82 cam as you know and the LT-1 is more than fun. Thats if you like old cams. I like the Crane Energizer 272 also - used to run it, but too much for what you want.

Paul, sounds like a downgrade to me, but maybe I'm missing something. Have you thought about getting that $900 engine and maybe trying to pick up a TPI setup and get fuel injection. Seems like you enjoy a smooth running, reliable motor and the TPI might be well-suited for you. Just a thought.
