transmission swap
Hi everyone ! This is my first posting.
I am running a 1978 L48. I love the car , runs great but rather dead at take away. Was considering some engine mods but hate to tare apart a good working motor. It has the 3 speed auto with 3o8 rear. Was wondering if anyone has swaped that transmission for one with an overdrive.
Can this trans swap be done ? Then would changing rear gears to possibly 355 help the low end get go at take away ?
Thanks for any responce !

Re: transmission swap (shifter)
Welcome to the forum!
You can put an overdrive unit in and many folks do so. Do a search in the archive for "200-4R" and "700-R4" and you'll be reading for weeks on the subject. Its a relatively expensive upgrade and more valuable for highway cruising aspect. There is an improvement in in low end too, but if thats all you're interested in a gearing change may be more economical.
Lots of good info in that archive!!! Good luck...

Re: transmission swap (shifter)
If you do a lot of highway driving, you want the overdrive. With a 3.08 rear end, the 700r4 is the way to go. It has a very low first gear that'll launch you very nicely. If you swap to a 3.55 gear, then a 200-4r is the tranny of choice.
