repair hole in alum block?
I aquired an engine out of a 2002 SS Camaro with less than 4K miles. The engine got water in it when the owner drove it in high water and the #8 rod broke and punched a small hole in the left side of the block just under the #7 cylinder. Can cast aluminum be welded or fixed or do I have a light weight boat anchor?

I vote boat anchor only because if the rod went throught the block then it tore up the cylinder wall and broke through the water jacket and even if they could re-sleeve it and weld up the jacket, the cost would out weigh just buying another LS1 short block.

As long as you haven't knocked out a main web bulkhead or knocked out the water jacket, absolutely. That is the beauty of aluminum castings (besides the lighter weight) is that it is relatively easy to make repairs. If it weren't, top fuel would be way more expensive than it is. Take the block to a certified welder. They'll TIG is up in no time. A good machine shop should be able to get the job done or point you in the right direction.

Well keeep in mind an aluminum block is weaker than iron from the get go. After patching it will still be a possible weak spot, especially if you plan to pump high HP out of it.

Like Gerry said, if it's just a hole in the block weld it up. Having all the original pieces would be nice when making the repair.
Corey, if done correctly, the repair in cast aluminum is stronger than the base. Believe it.......................Or not!!!!

I work with my tool shops on cast aluminum foam car seating molds for many years, the welding should work fine. We do engineering changes all of the time on cast aluminum with no problems.

I might have a block I can buy, It was a core that has a spun bearing out of a 99-00 Camaro. Want me to check? JIM
